The setting returns to the familiar yet unforgiving landscape of Night City, a sprawling metropolis controlled by powerful corporations like Arasaka where cybernetically augmented mercenaries known as edgerunners risk everything for a chance at glory or redemption. Unlike a direct continuation, this new saga does not follow Lucy or the remains of the original crew. Instead, it introduces a new antihero and their crew as they navigate the treacherous underworld of fixers, gang wars, and high-tech warfare. The narrative promises to be a raw chronicle focused on themes of revenge and redemption, delving into the psychological toll of chasing notoriety in a society that thrives on disposable thrills.

The creative forces behind the first season return, though with a significant change in leadership. Animation studio Trigger and producer CD Projekt Red are back to supervise the project, maintaining the signature visual style and emotional weight. Kai Ikarashi, known for his storyboard work on the original series and SSSS.Gridman, steps into the director's chair for his debut, promising a bleaker and bloodier tone. He is joined by showrunner and writer Bartosz Sztybor, lead character designer Ichigo Kanno of Promare fame, and screenplay adapter Masahiko Otsuka.
