ONA
Description
A Tokyo detective known for entering the subconscious dream states of suspects finds himself trapped in a series of bizarre, comedic scenarios outside of his usual investigation work. Kaname Date, a sharp-witted but deeply eccentric officer with an artificial left eye containing the AI partner Aiba, stars in five short animated episodes that reimagine the serious world of the AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES franchise as absurdist chibi-style comedy.
The premise unfolds not within a dark criminal case but across a variety of mundane settings turned surreal. In the first episode, Quiz Show, Date abandons his trench coat for a host's microphone, posing strange questions to a panel of contestants who reply with nonsensical answers. A later installment, Cooking Class, follows internet idol Iris Sagan and her obsessive fan Ota Matsushita as they attempt a culinary lesson. Ota, who runs a restaurant, tries to instruct, but Iris derails the lesson by adding bizarre, unidentifiable ingredients into the dish. Another episode, 24 Hour Policing, showcases Date's more aggressive detective instincts when he attempts to kick down the door of Ota's restaurant, leading to a heated and absurd standoff. The series also includes a Driving School segment where Iris gets behind the wheel of Date's car, quickly escalating a simple lesson into a genuinely dangerous situation, as well as an isekai-inspired finale titled Another World, where Ota finds himself reincarnated in a fantasy realm and must rescue Iris from a device that strongly resembles the series' signature Psync machine. The anthology stars the gruff detective Kaname Date alongside the voice talents of returning characters including the AI Aiba, internet idol Iris Sagan, and the often-abused otaku Ota Matsushita.
