Description
In the mid-4th century BC, the Greek city-state of Cardia is home to a brilliant young man named Eumenes, whose life is marked by a terrible secret. Originally born a Scythian, he was adopted as a child by the Greek scholar Hieronymus after his biological family was killed in a slave raid. Despite his privileged upbringing, Eumenes is haunted by recurring nightmares of a woman killing soldiers, a premonition of the violence that will soon shatter his world.

When a violent slave named Thrax leads a bloody escape attempt, the resulting chaos leaves Hieronymus dead. Eumenes' true heritage is exposed, and he is falsely accused of murder, leading to his enslavement and a complete loss of his former identity. Forced to navigate a brutal world where his life is worth little more than the price of his labor, Eumenes begins a long and arduous journey. After a failed slave mutiny and a shipwreck, he washes ashore near the village of Boa in Paphlagonia. There, he uses his intellect and knowledge of Greek customs to integrate into the community, eventually defending the village from an attack by mercenaries and killing their leader.

The narrative follows Eumenes from these humble and tragic beginnings as he gradually builds a new destiny. Rather than relying on brute force, he sharpens his natural cunning, strategic mind, and political intelligence to survive and rise above his circumstances. His path eventually leads him back to a besieged Cardia, where his tactical knowledge attracts the attention of a disguised Philip II, the King of Macedon, who impulsively offers him employment.

This marks the beginning of Eumenes' ascension from a wandering outcast to a key figure in the ancient world. He becomes an apprentice and secretary, eventually serving as the personal secretary and a general to Philip’s son, Alexander the Great. His journey brings him into contact with numerous historical figures, including the philosopher Aristotle, who recognizes his intellectual aptitude, and Alexander himself, who is portrayed alongside his half-brother Arrhidaeus and his mother Olympias, each pursuing their own political objectives. From the shores of the Hellespont to the halls of Macedonian power, Eumenes relies not on his sword arm but on his wits to navigate a world of slavery, war, and political upheaval, chronicling the rise of an empire through the eyes of the man who helped shape it.
