Description
Aia Udagawa, a boy with a hidden passion for makeup, has spent years hiding that dream because everyone around him insists his good looks mean he should stick to modeling. Jun Sumisaki, a tall girl with freckles who dreams of becoming a model, struggles to hold her head high, ashamed of the very features she was once taught to love. Both are students at Aoiyama High School, an institution known for nurturing future talent in the entertainment and beauty industries. When they are paired together for the school's prestigious Aoi Festival fashion contest, Jun makes a bold proposal: they should swap roles. Aia will take full creative control as her makeup artist, and she will walk the runway as his model.
This successful collaboration becomes a turning point, giving Aia the courage to pursue his abandoned ambition and Jun the confidence to chase a modeling career. After the contest, Aia is encouraged to join MIRROR, an exclusive and innovative makeup school founded by famous industry professionals, including the enigmatic model and makeup artist Hikaru Daiya Oya, who is also Aia's former mentor and idol. At MIRROR, Aia finds himself surrounded by talented and driven peers, such as Daiya's skilled but cool-headed protégé, Akiharu Nakano, who becomes his friendly rival. As he navigates the competitive pressure of the academy and the looming U21 Hair and Makeup Competition, Aia must confront his deep-seated insecurities and the complex feelings he holds toward Daiya. Meanwhile, Jun begins attending casting calls, learning to leverage her unique look and battling the industry's rigid beauty standards to find work as a professional model.
The story follows Aia and Jun as they walk the challenging road toward their respective dreams, from high school runway shows to the high-stakes world of professional fashion. They build new support networks with friends and rivals, all while striving to prove that talent and hard work can defy societal expectations. The series is noted for its deep emotional depth, its detailed portrayal of makeup artistry as a form of creative expression, and its exploration of themes like gender norms, personal insecurities, and the pressure to be perfect within the beauty industry. The television anime adaptation is confirmed to be produced by studio A-1 Pictures, with direction by Shotaro Kitamura, scripts by Fukurou Kamiza, and music by Yoshihiro Yoshitaka, scheduled to premiere in 2027.
