Description
A French philosopher named Sophie travels to Fukushima Prefecture for the first time to attend a friend's wedding. Arriving in an unfamiliar land, she soon loses her way and discovers that her map is missing. At that moment, a mysterious figure appears before her. This friendly companion provides her with a new map and becomes her guide through the region.
Following the lead of this enigmatic friend and the map, Sophie embarks on a journey across Fukushima, making unexpected detours and stops along the way. As she travels, she begins to see that everything around her from the rich natural scenery to the enduring local traditions and crafts represents a culture that was created by people and carefully passed down through generations. The film serves as an exploration of Fukushima Prefecture, highlighting its hidden treasures and the deep connections between its people and their way of life. It was produced as the second brand movie for the Fukushima Map, a comprehensive information magazine about the area.
The film was directed and written by Sunao Katabuchi, known for works such as In This Corner of the World and Black Lagoon. The production brought together several of Katabuchi's frequent collaborators, including manga creator Fumiyo Kono, who provided the original character designs, and musician kotringo, who composed the film's music. Animation production was handled by the studio CONTRAIL.
