Description
In the shattered world following the Death Stranding, a cataclysmic event that blurred the line between the living and the dead, a mysterious figure known only as Mosquito emerges from the murky waters of the Seam. This animated film, a new story set within the universe created by Hideo Kojima, does not follow the famed porter Sam Bridges. Instead, it centers on this enigmatic protagonist whose peculiar ability to suck something vital from others, specifically not blood, gives him his unsettling nickname. The teaser footage reveals him swimming towards a submerged human form and later engaging in a fierce hand-to-hand battle on the surface against a porter equipped with a cargo suit, all while rain known as Timefall accelerates the aging of everything it touches.

The narrative unfolds in a desolate near-future America, a landscape haunted by invisible Beached Things, or BTs, and fractured by the collapse of society. Mosquito is seen interacting with these creatures in a surprisingly tender manner, stroking a beast-like BT before turning to strike its would-be captor. This action suggests he may be a defender of these beings, putting him in direct opposition to the porters whose mission is to reconnect isolated cities and navigate the dangerous terrain haunted by the dead. The conflict hinted at in the early footage pits this strange, perhaps repatriated, individual against the very system trying to rebuild humanity, with a fight sequence that showcases a unique visual style combining hand-drawn character lines with digitally assembled animation.

Key figures behind the film include director Hiroshi Miyamoto, with a screenplay by Aaron Guzikowski, known for his work on Prisoners and Raised by Wolves. Backgrounds are being handled by Studio Easter, recognized for their work on the anime Dandadan, while animation production is led by ABC Animation Studio. The working title, Mosquito, directly refers to the main character’s core ability, and while the full extent of this power remains shrouded in mystery, creator Hideo Kojima has emphasized it involves taking away something of great importance. The film charts an original path within the Death Stranding lore, exploring the themes of connection and isolation from a new perspective, that of an individual whose very nature may be to sever or absorb the bonds that others risk everything to create.
