Description
The Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School is a government-run institution that claims to prepare Japan’s future elite. Students are sorted into four classes ranked A through D, with Class A receiving the most privileges and Class D being treated as the lowest tier. The school operates on the S-System, where each class earns monthly “Private Points” based on overall performance and behavior. Students can spend these points on anything on campus, from food to luxury goods. But the system is far more ruthless than it appears: classes must constantly compete in special exams that can result in point loss, demotion, or even expulsion.
Kiyotaka Ayanokōji enrolls in Class D and initially tries to keep to himself, but his plans for a quiet school life are disrupted when he meets Suzune Horikita, a brilliant but socially isolated student who is determined to rise to Class A, and Kikyō Kushida, a friendly and popular girl who hides a manipulative and vengeful side. Their homeroom teacher, Sae Chabashira, reveals that the school does not disclose the full rules; the classes’ rankings are determined by far more than test scores.
The first major arc involves the class discovering that their monthly points have been deducted to zero due to accumulated infractions. With no points, students cannot buy necessities or even pay for exam retakes. Ayanokōji and Horikita begin working behind the scenes to help classmates who are at risk of failing midterms. They use points to “buy” passing grades from higher-performing students, securing the survival of several classmates.
Soon after, Ken Sudō, a hotheaded Class D student, is accused of assaulting three Class C students. The Student Council, led by Manabu Horikita (Suzune’s older brother), holds a hearing to decide Sudō’s expulsion. Ayanokōji and Suzune set up a hidden camera to reveal the Class C students lying, forcing them to drop the complaint and saving Sudō.
The school then conducts its first special test: a deserted island survival exam. Each class receives 300 points and must designate a secret leader. The class with the most points at the end wins, but if the leader’s identity is guessed by another class, their own points are halved. Despite internal sabotage—including the theft of Horikita’s keycard—Ayanokōji correctly identifies the leaders of both Class A and Class C while ensuring Class D’s own leader remains hidden. Class D wins, gaining points and rising in the rankings.
The next special test, the Zodiac Test, divides students into twelve groups by zodiac sign, each containing one hidden “VIP.” Groups must discuss and vote on the VIP’s identity. The rules allow for betrayal and deception. During this test, Ayanokōji discovers Kei Karuizawa’s past as a bullying victim and forms a pact with her: he will protect her from harm in exchange for her future cooperation as an ally.
The school holds a sports festival where Class D is paired with Class A against Class B and Class C. Kakeru Ryūen, the ruthless leader of Class C, plants a traitor in Class D to sabotage their performance. Despite this, Ayanokōji wins a critical relay race against Student Council President Manabu Horikita, though Class D finishes last overall.
The Paper Shuffle exam follows, where classes design test questions for their rivals. Class D is paired against Class C. Horikita organizes study groups, and Ayanokōji prevents Kushida from sabotaging the class’s exam papers by blackmailing her with knowledge of her secret past.
Ryūen, frustrated by his inability to expose Class D’s true strategist, kidnaps Kei Karuizawa and interrogates her at a construction site, physically and psychologically torturing her. Ayanokōji arrives, defeats Ryūen and his associates in a fight, and reveals himself as the mastermind behind Class D’s successes. Ryūen takes responsibility for the incident and steps down as Class C’s leader. As a result, the original Class D is promoted to Class C.
The final exams of the first year include a Mixed Training Camp, where students are divided by gender and grade level, requiring cooperation between rival classes in traditional arts, physical endurance, and a written test. Then comes the emergency Class Poll exam: each student votes “praise” and “censure” for classmates. The student with the most censure votes in each class is expelled. This results in the expulsion of three students, including Yamauchi Haruki from the original Class D.
The year ends with the Event Selection Exam, where class leaders choose events such as chess, basketball, and written tests. Ayanokōji faces Arisu Sakayanagi of Class A in a chess match. Although his move would have won, the Acting Director, Tsukishiro, manipulates the school’s computer system to change the outcome, giving Class A victory. The first year concludes with the original Class D promoted to Class C, now facing even greater challenges.
The second year begins with new special exams and the introduction of a new cohort of first-year students, including at least one whom Ayanokōji suspects originates from the same mysterious “White Room” facility that shaped his own upbringing. The competition becomes more complex, with new alliances, betrayals, and a growing threat from the student council president, Miyabi Nagumo, who seeks to dismantle the old hierarchy. Ayanokōji continues to manipulate events from the shadows, but his past begins to catch up with him.
Throughout the series, key characters include the fiercely independent Honami Ichinose (Class B), the calculating Arisu Sakayanagi (Class A, who respects Ayanokōji as an equal), the violent but cunning Kakeru Ryūen, the loyal but traumatized Kei Karuizawa, and the ambitious but initially aloof Suzune Horikita. Ayanokōji himself remains an enigma: a prodigy raised in isolation, emotionally detached, yet capable of extraordinary empathy and strategic thinking when it serves his goals. The story is a psychological thriller about meritocracy, manipulation, human nature, and the cost of climbing the social ladder.
