Description
"Unico: Short Story" is a 1987 anime OVA based on Osamu Tezuka's manga series "Unico." The narrative centers on Unico, a small, magical unicorn with the ability to bring happiness to those around him. Unico's existence is threatened by the gods, who fear his powers disrupt the natural order. The goddess Venus orders Unico's banishment, but the West Wind, sympathetic to the unicorn, secretly saves him and transports him to a new world.
The story begins with Unico awakening in a barren desert, where he encounters a lonely demon named Chao. Chao, initially hostile, is softened by Unico's kindness and decides to help him. The two form an unlikely friendship and embark on a journey to find a place where Unico can live freely. Along the way, they encounter various characters, including a group of bandits and a young girl named Cheri, who is searching for her missing father. Unico uses his powers to help these individuals, often at great personal cost, as his magic drains his energy.
As the journey progresses, the gods discover Unico's continued existence and send the goddess Psyche to capture him. Psyche, conflicted by her duty and her growing empathy for Unico, struggles to carry out her mission. The story explores themes of friendship, sacrifice, and the struggle against fate, as Unico and his companions face both external threats and internal dilemmas.
The OVA is notable for its emotional depth and moral complexity, presenting a tale that balances whimsical fantasy with darker, more introspective elements. Unico's unwavering compassion and resilience serve as the emotional core of the narrative, while the supporting characters, including Chao and Psyche, add layers of conflict and growth. The story concludes on a bittersweet note, emphasizing the transient nature of happiness and the enduring impact of kindness.
