Description
El of the Water is a major antagonist from the Japanese television series Kamen Rider Agito. As one of the three El Lords, it belongs to the highest and most powerful class of beings known as Lords, who serve directly under the mysterious entity known as the Overlord or the Dark Power. El of the Water has a whale-like motif and is specifically designated as the ruler of the sea, possessing dominion over water and the creatures of the ocean. Physically, the creature stands 218 centimeters tall and weighs 158 kilograms in its original form, bearing an appearance that can be described as feminine though it speaks with a deep male voice.
The entity is primarily known for being the instigator of the Akatsuki Incident, a pivotal event that occurred before the main story of Kamen Rider Agito. On a sunny day, the ferry ship Akatsuki encountered a sudden and inexplicable storm, during which El of the Water attacked the vessel. Its purpose was to eliminate a being known as the Power of Light that had appeared on the ship. While the Power of Light managed to awaken one passenger, Tetsuya Sawaki, as the first Agito before disappearing, El of the Water attacked the newly transformed warrior and defeated him, causing him to fall into the stormy sea and lose his memory. Rather than kill the other passengers who witnessed the event, the El Lord chose to spare them, recognizing that they too had inherited the potential to become Agitos. It declared that it would allow them to live until the moment they showed signs of awakening their power, and to ensure they never spoke of the incident, it took possession of one of the passengers, a woman named Masumi Seika, hiding inside her body as a living surveillance mechanism.
The personality of El of the Water is defined by its absolute dedication to its mission: the destruction of all beings who possess or have the potential to awaken the power of Agito. It acts as an agent of the Overlord, carrying out the will to eliminate the threat that Agitos pose to the established order of the world. The creature is highly methodical and patient, willing to remain dormant inside a human host for over a year to monitor potential threats. It speaks in a calm and condescending manner, addressing humans with a sense of inherent superiority. However, as the creature evolves, its personality becomes more twisted and sadistic. In its strengthened form, it takes pleasure in tormenting and toying with its opponents before attempting to destroy them, showing a cruel enjoyment in the suffering of the Riders.
Throughout the story, El of the Water awakens from within Masumi Seika and begins systematically eliminating the surviving passengers of the Akatsuki who are beginning to show signs of awakening as Agitos, using Masumi's body as a vessel to commit the murders without her conscious knowledge. When it finally emerges fully, it reveals to Masumi the truth of what she has done before discarding her body, which results in her death. The El Lord then directly confronts the main Riders. It engages the G3-X armored suit, but spares its wearer after determining that he possesses zero potential to become an Agito, seeing him as no threat. This action demonstrates the creature's singular focus on its designated targets. El of the Water proves to be overwhelmingly powerful, easily defeating the Gills and G3-X systems simultaneously and leaving both unconscious. When it faces the protagonist Shouichi Tsugami, the primary Agito, the hero is paralyzed with fear upon recognizing the El Lord as the being that defeated him on the ferry, causing his self-doubt and forcing him to retreat.
El of the Water possesses an array of formidable abilities. Its primary weapon is a forked spear called the Resentment Du Sanga. Any person struck by this weapon becomes paralyzed and unable to move, eventually dying in a state of blissful happiness. The creature can generate powerful blast waves or shockwaves from its palms strong enough to send opponents flying and even forcibly cancel an Agito's transformation. It can manipulate weather systems, creating storms on a massive scale, and has complete control over water flow. The El Lord can fly, produce a lethal breath that kills humans instantly, and has potent telekinetic powers that allow it to redirect projectiles or suspend objects in midair. One of its most dangerous traits is its incredible regenerative ability, which allows it to recover almost instantly from wounds, such as when it healed a body riddled with bullet holes from heavy artillery in moments. The creature can also possess human beings, taking full control of their bodies while remaining hidden within them. When defeated, rather than dying completely, El of the Water transforms into a blue-white sphere of energy and retreats into the body of the Overlord to recuperate and evolve.
After its initial defeat by Agito in his Burning Form, El of the Water returns for a second confrontation in a new Strengthened Form. In this evolved state, its weight increases to 165 kilograms and it wields a new axe-like weapon called the Hateful Bardiche, which has a bladed, two-pronged fork capable of hooking and striking enemies. Its magical and psychic abilities are dramatically heightened in this form. It can now create floating magical emblems or portals that can be slammed into the ground to cause massive explosions, and it has the ability to warp its body to phase through incoming attacks, essentially making it intangible at will. In this strengthened state, El of the Water overpowers all four Riders simultaneously, defeating Agito, G3-X, Gills, and Another Agito with ease. It demonstrates the power to stop projectiles in midair and redirect them, and possesses enough strength to break the Gills Stinger, which is rated to withstand fifty tons of tensile strength. The creature's fighting style becomes more aggressive and playful, as it relishes the chance to dominate its enemies.
The development of El of the Water is ultimately tied to its complete destruction. After the protagonist Shouichi Tsugami regains all of his lost memories and resolves to fight without fear, he confronts the El Lord once more. The battle becomes a team effort, with Exceed Gills landing a powerful heel claw attack and Another Agito striking with an assault kick, wounding the creature and creating an opening. Shouichi then assumes Agito's ultimate Shining Form and delivers the killing blow with the Shining Rider Kick. For the first time, El of the Water is unable to retreat to the Overlord's body in time. The damage is too severe, and the creature dissolves into a puddle of water, ceasing to exist permanently, much to the shock of its master.
El of the Water is portrayed as the most significant and powerful subordinate antagonist in Kamen Rider Agito, a direct instrument of the divine will responsible for the tragic incident that drives the entire narrative. Its whale-like design, immense power, and cruel personality make it a memorable force that pushes every main character to their absolute limits. The character also appears in the crossover film OOO, Den-O, All Riders: Let's Go Kamen Riders, where it appears as a representative of the Lords in an alliance of evil organizations in an alternate timeline, as well as in several Kamen Rider video games where it functions as a boss enemy.
