Kiyoyuki Yanada was a celebrated Japanese voice actor born on May 10, 1965, in Nerima, Tokyo. A graduate of the Aoni Juku training school's fifth class, he began his career in 1987. His first successful audition was for the role of the villain Shuten-Dōji in the 1988 series Ronin Warriors. Over a career spanning 35 years, Yanada became known for his deep, commanding voice, which made him a natural fit for large, powerful, and often authoritative characters, whether heroic or villainous. He was affiliated with several agencies, including 81 Produce, before working as a freelancer. Yanada passed away on November 14, 2022, at the age of 57 while undergoing cancer treatment.

Yanada's body of work is extensive and spans numerous genres. One of his most iconic and enduring roles was as the gentle giant and team captain Takenori Akagi in the classic basketball anime Slam Dunk. This role is frequently cited as a defining part of his legacy. He also played many other memorable characters across long-running series, including Andre Camel in Detective Conan, a role he voiced from 2008 until his passing, Tessai Tsukabishi in Bleach, Andreas Darlton in Code Geass, and General Rildo in Dragon Ball GT.

In addition to his anime work, Yanada was a prolific voice actor in video games and tokusatsu (live-action special effects) productions. His video game roles include the iconic Jotaro Kujo in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure games, Richter Belmont in the Castlevania series, Ghaleon in Lunar: Silver Star Story, and Mike Haggar in Marvel vs. Capcom Fighter V. In the tokusatsu genre, he was a frequent presence in the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series. Notably, he voiced the main antagonist Boss Tau Zanto throughout the entirety of Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger and the villain Yogostein in Engine Sentai Go-onger. He also provided the Japanese dub voice for characters like Shredder in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series.

Kiyoyuki Yanada's legacy is that of a versatile and hardworking actor whose distinctive voice brought depth and power to a vast array of characters. His roles in major franchises like Slam Dunk, Detective Conan, and numerous video games have left a lasting impression on fans and the industry. After his death, several of his ongoing roles, such as Andre Camel in Detective Conan, were taken over by other actors, ensuring that the characters he helped define would continue to live on.
