Description
Shuten Dōji, originally Toshitada Koma, was born on May 5, 1551, in Kyoto (formerly Yamashiro Province) during Japan's Warring States period. A young samurai lord driven to unify Japan, his frustration grew from his inability to protect his territory from rival clans. This ambition and resentment drew the attention of the demon lord Arago (also known as Talpa), who promised dominion over humanity. Toshitada accepted, abandoning his clan and humanity to become the Oni Masho—one of Arago's four Heavenly Kings—in the Youjakai (Netherworld). His transformation into Shuten Dōji involved discarding his human identity, symbolizing his descent into darkness.

As the Oni Masho, Shuten Dōji wore the Armor of Oni (or "Cruelty"), representing the virtue of loyalty (Chū) and the season of Spring. His armor was adorned in dark gray and blue plates over a brown-gold jacket, and his weapon was the Yokoshima Oni Kama, a chain sickle with a clawed weight. Its signature technique, Ko Rai Sen (Crimson Lightning Flash), manifested as red lightning to entangle and electrocute opponents. Shuten stood as the strongest Masho, adhering to a strict code of honor that rejected sneak attacks and mediocrity. Despite fierce loyalty to Arago, repeated failures led to his demotion and manipulation by the Jiryoshu spirits serving Badamon, who suppressed his true self.

Shuten Dōji's redemption began when the entity Kaos guided him to rediscover his humanity. Freed from Arago's control, he allied with the Samurai Troopers and joined Nasutei and the youth Jun in the quest for the Inochi no Magatama (Jewel of Life), one of three sacred artifacts needed to defeat Arago. During this quest, he formed tentative bonds with the Troopers and fully embraced his role as a protector. His ultimate commitment saw him sacrifice himself to transfer his armor to Kayura, Arago's former thrall, ensuring her freedom and solidifying his legacy as a redeemed warrior. This act of self-sacrifice, depicted in the series' final episodes, marked his complete transformation from a tormented antagonist to a selfless ally.

In the OVA *Legend of the Inferno Armor*, Shuten Dōji's armor played a critical role in the Troopers' battles against corrupted counterparts of their armors. His virtue of loyalty remained central, though his physical presence was limited post-sacrifice. The OVAs reinforced his thematic arc: a fall from grace driven by desperation, followed by atonement through unwavering allegiance to a just cause. Physically, he possessed fiery red hair, piercing blue-green eyes, stood 173 cm (5'8") tall, and weighed 67 kg (148 lbs). Post-redemption, his personality shifted toward introspection, favoring reading, writing, and self-improvement, with a noted dislike of beans.

Shuten Dōji's armor originated from the Nine Armors forged by Kaos from Arago's discarded armor, each imbued with a virtue. His armor, like the Troopers', drew power from its wearer's spirit and could manifest environmental protection or energy-based attacks. Its design included undergear for mobility and stored as a crystalline "Kokoro no Tama" (Jewel of the Heart) when inactive. His journey underscored the series' exploration of corrupted virtues—loyalty, initially twisted to serve Arago, was ultimately reclaimed to uphold justice.
