Description
Mang Kuangyun, also known by the title Ling Wang or King of Death, is a major antagonist in Souten no Ken, the prequel to Fist of the North Star. He is a master of the Hokuto Sonkaken branch of the Hokuto Sankaken, the three families of Hokuto martial arts. His background is rooted in his training in this forbidden school, during which he mastered the dangerous and forbidden technique known as Pressure Point Displacement, or Hikō Hen'i. This art allowed him to manipulate his own pressure points and those of others in ways that defied normal Hokuto principles. However, its power proved overwhelming, and he relied on opium to control its effects. His nickname, mad dog, reflects his ferocious and unstable nature in battle.

His personality is characterized by a deep, almost pathological madness that he considers the core of a warrior's soul. He is driven by a desire to fight a worthy opponent who can take his life, a wish he expresses to the Old Taoist Fortune Teller, who grants it. This obsession with a meaningful death colors his actions throughout the story. His motivations are not purely evil in a conventional sense; rather, they stem from a twisted personal code and a tragic love. He became involved with Pan Yu-Ling, the love interest of the protagonist Kenshiro Kasumi. Instead of killing her when the Hong Hua Hui took over, he erased her memories and sent her away, where she eventually became the feared warrior Li Xiu-Bao who fought against Japanese imperialists. His decision to take her memory was motivated by his own feelings for her and a desire to punish Kenshiro for their connection.

In the story, Mang Kuangyun is hired by the Hong Hua Hui to eliminate Pan Yu-Ling. His role is that of a powerful and fearsome assassin and martial artist who directly opposes Kenshiro. He engages Kenshiro in battle on multiple occasions, including a confrontation at a banquet where Wu Dong-Lai attempts to kill Qing Bang leader Pan Guang-Lin. His physical appearance is imposing: a tall, muscular man with a frightening face and spiky hair. After breaking his arm in a fight against Kenshiro, he wears a makeshift cast similar to the one Kenshiro uses.

His key relationships center on his rivalry with Kenshiro Kasumi, the 62nd successor of Hokuto Shinken. Their conflict is personal due to Mang Kuangyun's actions toward Pan Yu-Ling. He also shares a relationship with his own master, who attempted to prevent him from traveling to Japan to fight Kenshiro because his ambitions had turned evil. The master ultimately failed to seal his pupil's fists and was killed by Mang Kuangyun's own Pressure Point Displacement technique. He also operates alongside Charles de Guise, the other master of Hokuto Sonkaken, as an ally within the Hong Hua Hui's plans.

His character development follows a trajectory of self-destruction. Already suffering from a slow, decaying death caused by his self-inflicted pressure points, he accepts his fate and seeks to end his life in a worthy battle. His final confrontation with Kenshiro represents the culmination of his wish. Notable abilities include his mastery of Pressure Point Displacement, which allows him to alter pressure points on himself and others, granting him unpredictable and deadly techniques. He is also a highly skilled martial artist of the Hokuto Sonkaken school, capable of going toe-to-toe with Kenshiro. Despite his physical resemblance to Raoh from Fist of the North Star, his narrative role is more akin to that of Shin, acting as a personal and emotional antagonist driven by obsession and love rather than a pure conqueror.
