Description
Takenori Akagi captains the Shohoku High School basketball team as its starting center. He is the older brother of Haruko Akagi and fiercely protective of her, frequently stepping in when Hanamichi Sakuragi flirts with her. Akagi started playing basketball at Kitamura Middle School, forming a close bond with Kiminobu Kogure. As a Shohoku freshman, he stood at 193 cm but possessed limited skills beyond dunking and defense, struggling with dribbling, free throws, and pump fakes. Over the next two years, mentorship from Shohoku's former captain transformed him into a dominant center, refining his post scoring, footwork, and overall offensive game. By his third year, he reached 197 cm and 93 kg, wearing the captain's jersey number 4.
His leadership begins as strict and disciplined, emphasizing fundamentals and using physical correction, especially on Sakuragi. However, he evolves, employing psychological tactics like leveraging Sakuragi's stubbornness and ego during the national tournament against Sannoh. Akagi balances basketball with academics, excelling in English, Mathematics, and Science. He and Kogure are the only starters with grades high enough to tutor academically at-risk teammates.
On the court, Akagi is recognized as Kanagawa Prefecture's top center. His signature "Gorilla Dunk" stems from Sakuragi's nickname for him ("Gori"). He anchors Shohoku's defense with "fly-swatter" shot-blocking and rebounding, famously stating, "The one who controls the rebound controls the game." His physical strength allows him to dunk forcefully enough to shake the backboard and effortlessly throw Sakuragi with one arm. Key rivals include Ryonan's Jun Uozumi, whom he deeply respects, and Sannoh's Masashi Kawata, who initially outplays him in the national championship until Uozumi's encouragement reignites his spirit.
Akagi's defining moment comes during the Interhigh Tournament against Kainan, where he plays through a severe ankle injury, demonstrating his commitment to Shohoku's national championship dream. The loss to Kainan and the subsequent withdrawal of a scholarship offer from Shintai University lead him to prioritize university entrance exams post-tournament. After graduating, he retires from basketball, though the manga epilogue "10 Days After" implies he struggles to adjust academically due to missing the sport.
