Description
Gunrock is a miner from the town of Dawnvolta, known for his immense physical stature and an almost unshakable demeanor. At 38 years old, he stands 201 centimeters tall and possesses a weight that reflects his massive, powerful build. He typically wears a blue bandanna and gloves, a thick golden-yellow scarf, green pants, and brown boots. Despite his intimidating appearance, Gunrock has a kind heart and a generous personality. He is a father who loves his children deeply and, in the anime adaptation, is depicted as a widower raising five sons who all share his large frame and appearance. His temperament is famously steady; he is said to have nerves of solid steel and never gets upset, taking most situations with an easygoing attitude. He has two primary loves outside of his family: drinking at the local bar and gambling, especially playing cards. While he is a hard worker in the mines, his ambitions are straightforward, often seeking opportunities to secure easy wealth or treasure to improve his life and provide for his family.

Gunrock's primary motivation in the original story is a classic treasure hunt. After hearing a fellow miner speak of the legendary Power Stones, he sets out on a journey to excavate them for himself, relying on his unrivaled brute strength to succeed. His desire for the Power Stones is shown to be relatively simple and grounded; in his ending for the first game, he uses the stone's power not for conquest, but to win a card game, celebrating by buying drinks for everyone in the bar. By the time of Power Stone 2, Gunrock has grown bored with peaceful everyday life and drinking with his friends. Yearning for the thrill of another adventure, he seeks out a rumored flying castle that holds an ultimate treasure. Demonstrating his characteristic straightforwardness, he builds a giant cannon and launches himself directly into the floating fortress to begin his new quest.

In the anime, Gunrock's role expands to include a significant personal arc. His quest for riches is intertwined with a search for a new wife and a mother for his five children. This leads to a comedic subplot where he mistakes Ayame's cross-dressing brother, Kikunojo, for a woman and persistently, yet unsuccessfully, attempts to woo him, never discovering the truth. Ultimately, his story concludes with a happy development, as he marries a character named Cassie, who was originally Falcon’s arranged fiancée. With this marriage, Gunrock gains three more children, bringing his total to eight and finding the family stability he was seeking. Throughout both the game and the anime, his key relationships highlight his role as a caring father and a loyal, if somewhat rough-around-the-edges, friend and drinking companion.

In terms of development, Gunrock does not undergo a dramatic personality shift but rather remains a constant figure of immense strength and good-natured simplicity. His character arc is less about inner change and more about the fulfillment of his modest goals: acquiring wealth to live comfortably, enjoying drinks with his community, and securing a loving family. His story in the anime provides the most significant development, moving him from a widowed father seeking a partner to a happily married man with an even larger, blended family.

Gunrock's fighting style is a direct reflection of his profession as a miner, relying purely on devastating power over speed. He is a textbook heavyweight fighter; his attacks are incredibly slow but deal massive damage, and his high defense allows him to withstand hits that would stagger others. His low mobility is his primary weakness in a series that often emphasizes speed and dodging, requiring a player to carefully time his powerful blows. His combos are described as resembling a brutal barroom brawl, consisting of heavy body blows that leave opponents in a long hit-stun. He also demonstrates unique utility, capable of throwing objects and enemies farther and more effectively than any other fighter. Additionally, when Gunrock lands a powerful blow, he is able to take two Power Stones from his opponent at once, a unique attribute that can quickly turn the tide of a battle. When he collects enough Power Stones, Gunrock can undergo a Power Change, transforming into a massive stone golem. In this form, his abilities become even more destructive, including throwing large boulders with Gun Gun Rock, slamming the ground to stun opponents with Rock Crush, and performing Power Fusions like Rock n Roll, where he increases his size and rolls into a massive crushing ball, or Earthquake, where his stomps cause rocks to fall from the sky.
