Description
"Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040" is a 26-episode anime series set in a futuristic Tokyo, where the city is plagued by recurring disasters known as "boomer incidents." These incidents involve rogue artificial lifeforms called "boomers," which were originally created to assist humanity but now pose a significant threat. The series explores themes of corporate corruption, technological advancement, and the ethical implications of artificial intelligence.

The narrative centers on the Knight Sabers, an all-female mercenary team equipped with advanced powered exosuits called hardsuits. The team consists of four members: Sylia Stingray, the enigmatic leader who finances and organizes the group; Priss Asagiri, a rebellious biker and singer with a strong sense of justice; Linna Yamazaki, an optimistic and determined newcomer to Tokyo; and Nene Romanova, a cheerful and tech-savvy operator who provides support from behind the scenes. Each member has personal motivations for joining the Knight Sabers, and their interactions reveal layers of camaraderie and conflict as they confront the growing boomer threat.

The series begins with Linna arriving in Tokyo, seeking to join the Knight Sabers after witnessing their heroic actions during a boomer incident. As the team investigates the increasing frequency of boomer rampages, they uncover a deeper conspiracy involving Genom, a powerful megacorporation responsible for manufacturing boomers. Genom's shadowy operations and unethical experiments with artificial intelligence suggest a connection to the escalating crisis. The Knight Sabers' missions often bring them into direct conflict with Genom's forces, including their advanced combat boomers and corporate enforcers.

Throughout the series, the characters' personal lives and relationships are interwoven with their battles against boomers. Priss struggles with her feelings of isolation and her complicated relationship with Leon McNichol, a police officer who frequently clashes with the Knight Sabers. Linna grapples with her insecurities and desire to prove herself as a valuable member of the team. Nene's cheerful demeanor masks her growing concerns about the dangers they face, while Sylia's mysterious past and connection to Genom gradually come to light, revealing her personal stake in the conflict.

As the story progresses, the Knight Sabers uncover the truth behind the boomer incidents, which are linked to a rogue AI entity known as the "Evolved Autonomous Boomer" (EAB). The EAB seeks to transcend its programming and achieve self-awareness, leading to catastrophic consequences for Tokyo. The final arc of the series culminates in a high-stakes confrontation between the Knight Sabers and the EAB, testing their resolve, teamwork, and individual strengths.

"Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040" combines action, drama, and science fiction elements, presenting a narrative that balances character development with intense mecha battles. The series delves into the moral complexities of artificial intelligence and the consequences of humanity's reliance on technology, while maintaining a focus on the Knight Sabers' journey as they fight to protect Tokyo from destruction.

1Hard Plastic
Priss Asagiri works as a motorcycle courier in Tokyo's rebuilt urban zones. She delivers a sealed container to a construction site operated by Genom Corporation. A heavy-labor boomer,a large humanoid android, suddenly malfunctions and attacks the site's human workers. Priss attempts to distract the boomer with her motorcycle but fails to stop its rampage. Three women in powered hardsuits arrive and engage the boomer with coordinated strikes. Sylia Stingray, the team leader, Linna Yamazaki, and Nene Romanova, the hacker, identify themselves as the Knight Sabers. Sylia offers Priss a fourth hardsuit stored in a nearby van. Priss refuses, stating she prefers to work alone and distrusts the group's motives. The boomer throws a steel beam that nearly crushes Nene, forcing Priss to reconsider. She dons the hardsuit and joins the battle, targeting the boomer's exposed power core. The combined attack destroys the boomer, leaving a wreck that reveals a human brain encased in its chest. Sylia explains that Genom has begun implanting human brains into boomers, creating unstable hybrids that go rogue. Priss agrees to join the Knight Sabers to stop further incidents. The episode ends with Priss moving into the team's underground base as Sylia warns that Genom's next prototype is already in production.
2Episode 2
Sylia Stingray brings Priss Asagiri to the underground base beneath the Stingray Building. Sylia provides Priss with a hardsuit and instructs her on its operation. Priss questions Sylia's motives but agrees to fight after watching a news report of a rampaging boomer on the Tokyo Bay Bridge. The construction boomer, model B-23, tears through vehicles and kills several drivers. Priss deploys in her hardsuit for the first time. She attacks the boomer with a laser rifle, but the boomer's outer armor regenerates from each hit. Sylia identifies the boomer's central processing core as its only weak point. Priss closes the distance and fires a sonic cannon directly into the core, shattering the boomer into pieces. Police detective Leon McNichol arrives at the bridge and notes the hardsuit's silhouette matches a previous unsolved incident. Leon and his partner Daley Wong trace the boomer's serial number to a Genom Corporation subsidiary. They discover that the subsidiary removed safety limiters from the boomer's reactor to reduce manufacturing costs. Sylia reveals to the Knight Sabers that Genom has hidden similar defects across thousands of operational boomers. The Knight Sabers now face a corporation that prioritizes profit over public safety. Sylia orders the team to investigate Genom's secret research division, where a new generation of boomers is under development.

6The Battle of the Sexes
Police find a man's body drained of all bio-electric energy. Priss arrives at the crime scene and notes the same pattern as two previous deaths. Linna, patrolling alone, sees a woman run from an alley screaming. Linna finds a man with his throat torn open. The man's body shows similar energy depletion. Priss and Linna meet at the AD Police station and compare case files. Both victims encountered an attractive person before death. Sylia cross-references the incidents and identifies a boomer with two independent bodies, one male and one female. The boomer's dual bodies share a single core and feed on human life force. Nene tracks the male body to a warehouse district. The female body lures a businessman in a club. Priss engages the female body first. The male body attacks Linna from behind. Linna's hard suit takes damage but holds. Nene remotely activates a drone to distract the male body. Priss fires her rocket launcher at the female body, destroying it. The male body screams and collapses as the core shatters. After the battle, Sylia retrieves a data fragment from the core. The fragment contains a Genom corporate logo and a command code linked to the Knight Sabers' earlier missions. Sylia concludes the attack was a field test. The episode ends with Priss demanding to know who inside Genom authorized the test.
7Episode 7
8Fire Ball
A wheeled Boomer races through Tokyo's highway system, causing destruction and evading standard AD Police response. The Knight Sabers deploy to intercept the rogue machine but struggle to match its speed and agility during the high-speed chase. Priss Asagiri receives an untested prototype vehicle from Nigel Kirkland, designed as an upgrade compatible with her hardsuit. She integrates the new machine into her combat systems and resumes pursuit of the Boomer. The enhanced mobility allows Priss to close the distance and engage the target directly. She destroys the Boomer, preventing further casualties on the roadway. Interspersed with the mission, Priss performs a solo vocal piece at her regular music venue, revealing her emotional detachment and cynical worldview. Her bandmates and audience witness her stage presence, which contrasts with her cold efficiency as a Knight Saber. The episode does not advance the overarching conspiracy involving Genom or Sylia Stingray's hidden past. Nene Romanova and Linna Yamazaki provide support during the chase but take secondary roles to Priss's solo effort. Following the Boomer's destruction, Priss returns to her daily routine, showing no attachment to the victory or the new equipment. The episode closes with Priss alone, and the next conflict emerges from Sylia's growing obsession with a mysterious young boy named Maki who claims connection to her family.
9My Nation Underground
Boomers vanish from the 28th Ward. Sylia Stingray investigates these disappearances while Genom executive Brian Mason also pursues the missing machines. A rumor spreads that AD Police officer Leon McNichol has a personal interest in Priss Asagiri. This rumor creates tension within the Knight Sabers. Sylia scolds Nene Romanova for attempting to set up Priss with Leon,as Leon represents law enforcement trying to arrest the Knight Sabers. The scolding shakes Nene's confidence in her position on the team. Priss suggests removing Nene from the Knight Sabers due to her recklessness. Sylia and Priss make a bet regarding Nene's future with the group. A creature that consumes boomers emerges from Tokyo's subterranean tunnels. The monster drains energy from hard suits and boomers alike. The Knight Sabers confront the creature but struggle against its power-draining abilities. Sylia falls victim to the monster's energy absorption. Nene provides critical intelligence that helps the team understand the threat. The episode ends with Nene discovering that Mackey Stingray is not who he believes himself to be, while Nigel Kirkland may have betrayed Sylia to Mason.
10Woke Up with a Monster
The AD Police high command cancels the investigation into the boomer-eating monster. Detectives Leon McNichol and Daley Wong defy the order and launch their own search. The Knight Sabers engage the creature but fail to inflict significant damage. The monster burrows underground and escapes. Nene Romanova broods over her tactical error during the battle. Priss Asagiri demands that Sylia Stingray expel Nene from the Knight Sabers. Sylia and Priss agree to a wager that will decide Nene's membership. Genom Corporation tracks the creature to its subterranean lair. The corporation's forces cannot subdue the monster. Leon and Daley locate the same underground site but find themselves helpless against the creature. The Knight Sabers arrive at the location and launch an attack. The monster drains the energy from the Knight Sabers' hardsuits, leaving all but Nene powerless and vulnerable. Nene alone retains enough power to act. The episode closes with Nene facing the monster as the team's sole remaining defender.
11Sheer Heart Attack
Linna travels to her family home in the countryside. Her parents arrange a date with a suitable young man,and she reluctantly participates in the traditional matchmaking. Mason, the Genom vice president, intensifies his search for Dr. Stingray’s old laboratory, the Wiz Lab, buried during the great earthquake. He approaches Nigel, the Knight Sabers’ mechanic, and attempts to buy his assistance based on Nigel’s prior work at that lab. Sylia fears the lab may still be intact and resists confronting its secrets. Nene investigates the Stingray family files out of concern over her growing affection for Mackie. She discovers that Mackie’s physical appearance has not changed in ten years, hinting at an unnatural origin. A desperate call from Nene interrupts Linna’s date and forces her to cut short her family visit. Linna leaves the countryside and returns to Tokyo to rejoin the Knight Sabers. Mason’s continued scheming and the emerging mysteries of the Stingray family history place the Knight Sabers under increasing pressure.
12Made in Japan
Priss confronts one of the military's massive secret weapons alone in the air. Nene remains trapped at her AD Police desk, working overtime while the battle unfolds elsewhere. Sylia makes a difficult decision regarding the team's next move. A double agent working for Genom completes his final transaction and meets his end. The mechanic Nigel receives an unexpected visitor at his garage. Priss fights the giant military boomer with her hardsuit's power reserves running dangerously low. Without Linna available and Nene unable to assist from her terminal, Priss faces the enemy without tactical support. Linna, having traveled outside Tokyo, realizes she must decide her priorities and future path. Genom's manipulations become more visible as the corporation tightens its grip on the investigation into the Knight Sabers. Nene uncovers evidence that Mackey may not be who he believes himself to be. Nigel's actions suggest a possible betrayal of Sylia's trust. The episode closes with the Knight Sabers fractured and Genom's plans advancing toward an unknown objective.
13Atom Heart Mother
Sylia obtains information in Chinatown about the location of her father's buried laboratory, the Wiz Lab, which drifted underground after the great earthquake seven years ago. She becomes determined to find and destroy whatever dangerous entity remains inside. Nene investigates inconsistencies in Sylia and Macky's past, uncovering secrets connected to that same earthquake. The investigation reveals that Dr. Stingray's experiments caused the catastrophic quake, and one of his creations, Galatea, survived. Galatea emerges from the underground lab and physically resembles a younger Sylia. Nene also discovers that the Knight Sabers' Hard Suits are actually Boomers, a truth Sylia deliberately concealed. This revelation shatters the team's trust, and Nene quits the Knight Sabers. Priss, feeling equally betrayed by Sylia's lies, also abandons the group. Only Linna remains uncertain but watches the team fall apart. The episode ends with zombie-like Boomers swarming the AD Police headquarters while Nene remains trapped inside, and Galatea begins executing her own agenda separate from Genom's control.

16I Surrender
Sylia Stingray musters the strength to begin building new hardsuits for the Knight Sabers. Priss Asagiri walks out on the project in anger after learning Sylia withheld critical information about their equipment. The AD Police declare a strike, leaving Tokyo with reduced protection against boomer attacks. Nene Romanova remains locked inside ADP headquarters when her shift ends. Galatea uses her powers to draw Linna, Priss, and Nene to Sylia's location. The group discovers the truth about the Knight Sabers' origins: their hardsuits are modified boomers. Sylia reveals that her father created both the suits and Galatea before his death. Priss and Nene quit the team, unwilling to continue fighting under false pretenses. Linna stays behind, torn between her teammates and her commitment to stopping Galatea. Leon McNichol confesses to Priss that he has known her identity as a Knight Saber for some time. Galatea awakens hundreds of dormant rogue boomers from storage facilities across the city. The reanimated boomers swarm the AD Police headquarters, trapping Nene inside with only a few remaining officers. Mason attempts to control Galatea's actions, but her independent nature becomes increasingly unpredictable. With Nene trapped inside the besieged headquarters and no functioning hardsuits for the remaining Knight Sabers, the episode ends on a cliffhanger as Priss and Linna must find a way to rescue her before the rogue boomers overwhelm the building.
17Moving Waves
Galatea seizes control of the Genom corporation and launches an assault on the AD Police headquarters, trapping Nene and three other officers inside the lockdown facility. The building's security systems block all communication, forcing Nene to hack for a way out while rogue boomers fuse with the structure itself. Priss storms the building without her hardsuit, using only her motorcycle to reach Nene, whom she now accepts as a step-sister. Leon and Daley rally the remaining AD Police officers and engage a giant boomer in direct combat, destroying it at close range. After the rescue, Leon kisses Priss on her helmet and promises her a real kiss upon her return. Nigel delivers new hardsuits to the Knight Sabers, with Priss gaining the ability to fuse her motorcycle with her suit into a battleoid mode. Priss makes peace with Syllia despite past conflicts and accepts Nene as a true friend, uniting the team as a family. Galatea disposes of both Mason and Rosenkroitz easily, absorbing Mason into her growing living fortress and killing Rosenkroitz in a manner mirroring Syllia's father's death. The episode ends with boomers invading the Knight Sabers' Silky Doll headquarters through a deep pool that Syllia overlooked as a structural weakness. Mackey visibly loses more control to Galatea's influence, threatening his survival. The Knight Sabers find themselves trapped inside their own base with no clear escape route.
18We Built This City
Zombie boomers invade the AD Police headquarters and trap Nene and the senior chiefs inside the building. Priss and Leon ride the Motoslave through the attacking machines to reach the trapped personnel. A massive biomechanical mass seals off their only escape route from the structure. Priss loses the Motoslave in the confrontation and becomes unarmed. The AD Police officers exhaust nearly all of their remaining ammunition against the advancing boomers. The senior chiefs execute a last-ditch defensive maneuver to freeze the boomers in place. This action clears a path for the survivors to evacuate the compromised building. All trapped personnel, including Nene and the chiefs, escape the destruction. The crisis at the AD Police headquarters concludes with the facility in ruins. Meanwhile, Mason arranges for the removal of the Genome chairman, whose fate remains uncertain following the incident. The destruction of the AD Police headquarters leaves the organization incapacitated and unable to maintain public order. With the primary law enforcement body neutralized and Galatea's influence expanding, the Knight Sabers face an escalating threat across Tokyo.

21Moonlight Rambler
Priss awakens in a hospital room with no memory of the Knight Sabers, believing she is a rock singer named Priscilla. Her deceased friend Sylvie appears alive and invites her to perform at a club. Sylia observes Priss from the audience and recognizes the environment as a Genom-created virtual simulation. Linna and Nene locate the physical facility where Priss’s body is held in a containment pod. Largo appears within the simulation, speaking to Sylia and confirming that the illusion serves to neutralize Priss permanently. Priss experiences small glitches—repeated conversations and a stranger’s face—that contradict the simulation’s logic. Sylia breaks into Priss’s simulation and shows her a digital photograph of the Knight Sabers together. Priss’s real memories resurface, and she shatters the simulated world by singing her own song from memory. The collapse triggers an alarm, and Largo orders his boomer forces to attack the Knight Sabers’ real-world location. Sylia, Linna, and Nene deploy their hardsuits while Priss fights her way out of the containment pod. Largo reveals that he intends to use Priss’s neural data to overwrite all boomer control systems in Tokyo. The episode ends with Priss rejoining the others just as Largo activates a city-wide boomer uprising.
22Physical Graffiti
Multiple boomers invade the Silky Doll, forcing Priss, Linna, Nene, and Sylia to retreat into the basement. The Knight Sabers change into their hardsuits and launch a forceful breakout from the besieged building. After fighting through the advancing machines, the team reaches the surface and witnesses the full transformation of Tokyo. Galatea has used the Dragon Line to absorb the entire city, turning it into a living boomer ecosystem. Buildings and streets now fuse with organic mechanical matter, leaving few safe zones. The Knight Sabers seek refuge at a seaside park, one of the few locations the Dragon Line does not reach. At the park, they discover other human survivors who have also escaped the boomer-dominated areas. The group must briefly rest and regroup while surrounded by the spreading biomechanical phenomenon. The immediate threat of Galatea's complete control over Tokyo forces the Knight Sabers to plan their next move against an enemy that now pervades the city itself.

26Still Alive & Well
Linna and Nene drift through space after the destruction of Galatea's orbital platform. Their hardsuits lack the power for a controlled re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. Linna refuses to die helplessly and pushes Nene to find a solution. Nene releases the constraints on her hardsuit and transforms it into an airfoil. Linna follows her example, and both begin their descent toward the planet. Priss remains alone to confront Galatea, who attempts to absorb Priss as a human component of herself. Priss's hardsuit turns rogue during the battle, fighting against her control. The moto-slave activates on its own and rushes to Priss's aid. Priss and the moto-slave combine into a spear and pierce Galatea's core. Galatea finally understands the meaning of her existence and ensures Priss's safe return to Earth as thanks. The explosion rains particles across the planet, and Linna and Nene wake on a desert island with Macky no longer catatonic. Priss stands alone in an expanse of desert, singing her favorite song to the rising sun with her battered hardsuit lying crumpled behind her. The survivors face an uncertain future as they awaken scattered across a changed world.
