Hiroko Konishi
Description
Hiroko Konishi is a Japanese voice actress and musician born on October 26, 1975, in Saitama Prefecture. She became interested in stage acting during junior high school and later received voice training at the Nihon Narration Engi Kenkyūjo while in high school. She is a graduate of Chuo University's Faculty of Law.
Konishi began her voice acting career in 1994. She quickly became known for a wide range of roles in both anime and video games throughout the late 1990s. One of her most prominent roles was the title character in the long-running children's series Ojarumaru, a part she played from 1998 to 2000. Another significant role was Jiyuu Nanohana in the series Jubei-Chan The Ninja Girl - Secret of the Lovely Eyepatch, a character who was reportedly modeled after Konishi herself by director Akitaro Daichi. She also provided the voice for Sae Sawanoguchi in both the OVA and television versions of Magic User's Club.
In anime, her other major roles include Takeru Takaishi in the original Digimon Adventure, Akane Kimidori in the 1997 Dr. Slump series, Nene Romanova in Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, and Boo in Now and Then, Here and There. She also voiced characters in various OVAs and films, such as Sakura in Ninja Cadets, Mitsuru Imai in Seikimatsu Leader Gaiden Takeshi!, and Miho Hamaoka in If I See You in My Dreams. Konishi was a prolific voice in video games as well. She is known for her roles as Lilith Aensland in the Darkstalkers series, Lisa Silverman in Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Roll in Mega Man 8, Shiori Misaka in the original Kanon visual novel, Elena in Grandia II, and Bridget in Guilty Gear X2.
During her career, Konishi collaborated with several directors and fellow voice actors on multiple projects. She worked frequently with director Akitaro Daichi on series such as Kodocha, Jubei-chan, and Now and Then, Here and There. Her regular co-stars included voice actors Yūji Ueda and Junko Takeuchi, with whom she appeared together in over seven productions.
In addition to voice acting, Konishi pursued a career in music. She released her first album, NOVELETTE, under EMI Music Japan in 1999. In 2000, she formed the musical unit Little Cure with collaborators Ryo Asakawa and NAOMI. She also appeared as a television personality on variety shows and in live-action commercials.
Konishi's career as a voice actor underwent a significant change around the year 2000. In 2018, she publicly disclosed that she had been sexually harassed and subsequently faced difficulties obtaining voice acting work after refusing to comply with certain demands. She also alleged that her voice recordings from Ojarumaru were used on merchandise without her consent, leading to disputes and her departure from the series. Many of her prominent roles were later taken over by other actresses, including Yui Horie, Chinami Nishimura, and Akemi Sato.
Following her departure from regular voice acting, Konishi has continued to work as an independent musician and creator under her agency, Office Squirrel. In the 2010s and 2020s, she has released new music digitally and has been involved in planning, scripting, and voicing characters for educational video projects.
