Description
Ojarumaru Sakanoue is a 5-year-old noble prince hailing from the Heian-era Fairy World (Yōsei-kai). The only child of the aristocratic Sakanoue family, he sports light skin, black eyebrows, brown hair, and traditional Heian attire: a sokutai robe, a dark blue eboshi hat, and green shoes. This eboshi hat functions as a fourth-dimensional storage space for his collection of rare objects.

His personality blends spoiled, laid-back, and lazy inclinations with a whimsical and inquisitive nature. He exhibits a strong aversion to exertion, favoring extended relaxation or napping on his three-piece Santen Set (a pedestal, byōbu screen, and armrest). This dislike of effort manifests in dependence on others, such as riding on his friend Kazuma Tamura's back or backpack during outings. He procrastinates on obligations like homework and displays a notable fear of water. His favorite food is pudding, discovered in the modern era.

Ojarumaru speaks in archaic, polite Japanese reflective of his aristocratic upbringing. He refers to himself as "Maro" and others as "Sochi," frequently ending sentences with polite copulas like "de ojaru," "ka no," "nou," "ja," "ja no," "no ja," or "tetamo." Characteristic exclamations include "Oja" (surprise/attention), "Ojahoho" (delight), "Ojazozo" (disturbance by Princess Okame), and "Ojabu" (sulking). He often mispronounces unfamiliar words.

His background involves accidentally warping to modern Japan after stealing Great King Enma's judgment scepter and fleeing into the Moon Hole. He resides in Moonlight Town (Gekkō-chō) with the Tamura family, bonding particularly with 8-year-old Kazuma, whom he views as a brother. He travels between eras via the Tsukiyo Ike pond's moon reflections. Denbo, a firefly messenger and caretaker from the 30th generation of the Densho-Botaru family, oversees him at his parents' request, though Ojarumaru often bosses Denbo around.

Key relationships define his story. His archrivals are the Kooni Trio—Aobē, Kisuke, and Akane—young oni sent by Enma to retrieve the scepter. Ojarumaru consistently evades their schemes, mocking them with the nickname "Kooni mera." He avoids Princess Okame, his fiancée, reacting to her presence with "Ojazozo." Modern connections include Kazuma's family, classmates like the fashion-conscious Komachi (whom he addresses as "Komachi-chan"), and others in Gekkō-chō.

In the movie "Eiga Ojarumaru Yakusoku no Natsu Ojaru to Semira," Ojarumaru interacts with Semira, a mysterious boy resembling a figure from the village elders' childhood summer. Semira joins Ojarumaru and his friends during their adventures.
