Description
Kanako Shimada is Akira Takaoka's childhood friend and classmate. She harbors romantic feelings for him but struggles to express them effectively due to his obliviousness. Her personality contrasts sharply with Akira's computer-centric world; she exhibits limited understanding and visible discomfort, even near-panic, when required to use technology. This technological ineptitude frustrates her, especially as Akira frequently discusses computers with his male friends, creating a barrier between them.
Hoping to bridge this gap and gain Akira's attention, Kanako gifts him a decommissioned computer once owned by her deeply respected father. This gesture represents both a practical effort to engage his interests and a heartfelt plea for connection. Her efforts face complications with the arrival of Mimi, whom Akira claims is his cousin visiting from overseas. Kanako reacts with skepticism toward Mimi's sudden appearance and true origins, watching Akira's close interactions with her suspiciously and with jealousy.
Despite her initial reservations and envy, Kanako gradually develops a rapport with Mimi. She consciously avoids creating conflict that might alienate Akira further, leading to a pragmatic, albeit cautious, acceptance of Mimi's presence. During a confrontation involving the antagonistic American bio-computers known as the Nackintosh sisters, Kanako inadvertently plays a crucial role. Unaware of the virtual conflict, her actions involving misplaced diskettes—including one containing a virus—result in deploying digital "worms" that disrupt the antagonist Perfoma's systems, contributing to the crisis resolution. Akira later acknowledges this unintentional assistance.
Kanako demonstrates consistent concern for Akira's well-being, shown by her distress when he and Mimi disappear during the computer store incident and her subsequent apology for the diskette confusion. Akira praises her actions despite her confusion over the circumstances.
