Description
Priscilla S. Asagiri, known almost universally as Priss, is a core member of the Knight Sabers in Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 and serves as the group's frontline fighter and heavy assault specialist. A Japanese-American woman in her late teens, she is the lead vocalist of an underground rock band and spends much of her time away from the team living as a distrustful loner in the slums of Tokyo, where she resides in a trailer truck. She is rarely seen socializing with her fellow Knight Sabers outside of missions, and her tough, moody, and defiant exterior reflects a deeper wariness of other people.
Her difficult past shapes much of who she is. Priss was orphaned at a young age after losing her parents in the second great Kanto earthquake of 2025, and she spent a gloomy childhood in an orphanage with no one to rely on. As a teenager she drifted through the darker side of the city, performing as a small-time singer and finding release in the roar of her motorcycle. She eventually became involved with a biker gang and fell in love with its leader, but he was killed after discovering a dangerous organization's secret. When the authorities dismissed his death as an accident, Priss developed a deep grudge against the AD Police and law enforcement in general. Consumed by rage and a desire for revenge, she set out to hunt down those responsible, and it was during this volatile period that she caught the attention of Sylia Stingray, who recruited her into the Knight Sabers.
Priss's motivations are rooted in grief, anger, and a fierce desire for justice that the system refuses to provide. She fights Boomers with ferocious abandon and often throws herself into combat with little concern for her own safety, channeling her pain into the destruction of the machines she holds responsible for so much suffering. Despite her antisocial and anti-authoritarian nature, she cares deeply for the few people she considers friends, and her rebellious streak is tempered by a good heart and a sense of humor. Within the Knight Sabers she functions as the hammer of the outfit, providing overwhelming power in battle while Sylia supplies leadership and genius, Nene Romanova contributes technical wizardry, and Linna Yamazaki brings athletic precision. Her role in the story is central to the team's fight against rogue Boomers, and she is consistently presented as the strongest and most aggressive member of the group.
Priss's key relationships define her development over the course of the series. Her bond with Sylia is built on trust earned during her recruitment, even though Priss keeps her distance from the others. She gradually forms a meaningful connection with AD Police officer Leon McNichol, who pursues her romantically despite the friction between her distrust of police and his position as an officer. Their relationship develops into a mutual confession of feelings, allowing Priss to begin lowering the walls she has built around herself. At the same time, her loyalty to her fellow Knight Sabers grows, and she proves willing to put herself at tremendous risk for their cause.
Priss's notable abilities include her exceptional combat skill, her motorcycle riding, and her powerful hardsuit, which is built for heavy assault and features explosive charges and other formidable armaments. She also gains access to the Motoslave, a motorcycle-based machine that combines with her hardsuit for combat against more advanced opponents. Her development culminates in the final confrontation with the rogue artificial life form Galatea, during which her hardsuit malfunctions and begins transforming into a Boomer, subjecting her to extreme suffering. Priss ultimately overcomes Galatea's mental influence through sheer will, summons the Motoslave, and destroys the entity, even at the cost of being cast into space. Galatea, in a final act of respect, saves her and returns her to Earth, where Priss lands in a vast desert and sings a song she had planned to perform with her band. This closing image reflects her journey from a grief-stricken loner pursuing revenge to a fighter who has reclaimed her own voice and sense of purpose.
