Tadashi Nakamura

Tadashi Nakamura was a Japanese actor, voice actor, and narrator born on December 24, 1929, in Aichi Prefecture. He passed away on November 11, 2019, at the age of 89. Nakamura began his career in 1952 after joining the Radio Tokyo Broadcasting Theatre Company and made his voice acting debut dubbing the foreign film District Attorney. He was a founding member of the Tokyo Actor's Consumer's Cooperative Society, a talent agency to which he was affiliated for the duration of his career. Over more than six decades, he built a reputation as a versatile performer in anime, foreign film dubbing, and narration.
Nakamura's anime filmography includes a wide range of roles across many decades. In the 1960s, he voiced Tetsuharu Kawakami in the series Kyojin no Hoshi and its subsequent films Kyojin no Hoshi: Shukumei no Taiketsu, Kyojin no Hoshi: Dai League Ball, and Kyojin no Hoshi: Chizome no Kesshōsen. He also played the role of Umeboshi King in the series Umeboshi Denka: Uchū no Hate kara Panparopan!. In the 1980s, he voiced characters such as Dr. Mangetsu in Doraemon: Nobita's Great Adventure into the Underworld and the Red Shirt in the animated adaptation of Botchan. His notable roles from the 1990s include Shokatsuryō Kōmei in the OVA Giant Robo, Franz von Mariendorf in Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and Quincy Rosenkreutz in Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. In the 2000s, he appeared in several acclaimed films directed by Mamoru Hosoda, including The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, and Mirai. He also voiced Ahmad Fanakati in the series Animation Kikō Marco Polo no Bōken.
Beyond anime, Nakamura had an extensive career as a narrator and as the primary Japanese dubbing voice for numerous Western actors, including David Niven, Leslie Nielsen, and Rex Harrison. His narration for the Japanese-language version of the American sitcom Bewitched became particularly iconic. In recognition of his lifelong contributions to the voice acting industry, Nakamura was honored with the Merit Award at the 10th Seiyu Awards in 2016.
