Yui Horie

Description
Yui Horie is a Japanese voice actress and singer who has been active in the industry since her debut in 1997. Born on September 20, 1976, in Tokyo, she has become one of Japan’s most prominent and enduring voice talents, recognized for her extensive body of work across anime, video games, and music. She is often counted among the “声优御三家” (big three voice actresses) of her generation and is affectionately known to fans as “Hocchan.”

Horie’s career began after she trained at the Japan Voice Acting Institute as a scholarship student. Her first credited role was in the 1997 video game Voice Fantasia, and her first leading anime role came in 1998 with Kurogane Communication. The early 2000s marked a turning point as she secured a string of iconic roles that established her popularity. These included Naru Narusegawa in Love Hina, Tohru Honda in the 2001 adaptation of Fruits Basket, and Multi in To Heart. Other significant early and enduring roles include Ayu Tsukimiya in Kanon, Makie Sasaki in Mahou Sensei Negima!, and Honey Kisaragi in Re: Cutie Honey.

Throughout her career, Horie has demonstrated notable versatility, voicing a wide range of characters from energetic heroines to more complex and subdued figures. She has played dual or multiple roles in several series, such as Maria Ushiromiya in Umineko: When They Cry and Hanyū in the Higurashi: When They Cry franchise. Her role as Tsubasa Hanekawa across the Monogatari series, including Bakemonogatari, Kizumonogatari, and Owarimonogatari, is among her most critically acclaimed performances. Other prominent roles include Minori Kushieda in Toradora!, Yuki Cross in Vampire Knight, Chie Satonaka in Persona 4, Carla in Fairy Tail, Wiz in KONOSUBA, Belfast in Azur Lane, and Riko Izayoi/Cure Magical in the Mahō Tsukai Pretty Cure! series.

Her career is also marked by recurring collaborations with specific franchises. She has voiced Siesta across multiple installments of The Familiar of Zero series, Millhiore F. Biscotti in Dog Days and its sequels, Nepgear in the Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise, and several roles in the K series, including Anna Kushina. She also appears in numerous works from the Key visual novel franchise, voicing Ayu Tsukimiya in Kanon and Riki Naoe in Little Busters! and Kud Wafter.

In parallel with her voice acting career, Horie has maintained a successful music career. She released her debut single, “my best friend,” in 1998. She has formed several musical units, notably the duo Yamato Nadeshiko with Yukari Tamura in 2000, and the J-pop group Aice5 in 2005, for which she served as the founder and leader. Aice5 disbanded in 2007 but reunited in 2015. She also formed the gothic band Kurobara Hozonkai in 2006. As a solo artist, she has released numerous albums and singles, and her live performances have included concerts at major venues such as the Nippon Budokan in 2009, making her one of the few voice actors to achieve that feat.

Her achievements have been recognized with industry accolades. In 2010, she received the Best Supporting Actress award at the 4th Seiyu Awards, which she shared with Kikuko Inoue. She has been affiliated with the talent agency VIMS since 2007, after leaving Arts Vision. Her official fan club is named the “Black Cat Alliance” (Kuroneko Union).
