Description
Mizuho Miyanokouji is the main protagonist of Otoboku - Maidens Are Falling for Me!, originally from the visual novel series Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru. He is an androgynous male high school student who transfers into the all-girls Seio Girls Academy after his grandfather’s will stipulates that he must attend the school his mother once went to. To comply with the school’s gender-exclusive enrollment, Mizuho cross-dresses, a disguise made easier by his naturally feminine features and long blonde hair. His real surname is Kaburagi, but he uses his mother’s maiden name, Miyanokouji, to avoid detection while at the academy.
Mizuho’s background is marked by the early loss of his mother, who died from an unexplained illness when he was young. Before her death, she asked her husband not to force Mizuho to cut his hair until he was old enough to choose for himself, a request he honored and which later contributes to his androgynous appearance. As a child, Mizuho lacked self-confidence and tended to depend heavily on his childhood friend Mariya Mikado, often following her around. This reliance carried over into his school life when Mariya, who also attends Seio Girls Academy, helped him prepare for his cross-dressing role by advising on makeup and clothing.
In terms of personality, Mizuho is kind, polite, and considerate, with a gentle and empathetic nature. He is initially nervous and anxious about being discovered as a boy, constantly worrying that his secret will be exposed. Despite this, he is warmly received by the other students on his first day and quickly becomes popular for his friendly demeanor, athletic ability, and overall pleasantness. He continues to use masculine speech patterns, such as the first-person pronoun boku, which subtly distinguishes him from the other girls. His motivations are driven by a sense of duty to honor his grandfather’s final wish and a desire to fit in and avoid causing trouble for those who know his secret.
Mizuho’s role in the story centers on his integration into the all-girls school and the complications that arise from his disguise. Due to his popularity, he is unexpectedly nominated and later elected as the school’s Elder, the highest student honor, which places him in a leadership position alongside the student council president. This role forces him to interact closely with many students and navigate various events, competitions, and personal challenges.
Key relationships shape his development. Mariya Mikado is his most trusted confidante; she knows his secret from the beginning and actively supports him both practically and emotionally, while also teasing him occasionally. Shion Jujo, a classmate, discovers Mizuho’s true gender early on but chooses to keep the secret and helps him maintain his cover, becoming a close ally. Takako Itsukushima, the student council president, initially opposes Mizuho during the Elder election due to a long-standing rivalry between their powerful families (the Kaburagi and Itsukushima clans), but over time the two become friendly classmates who share a history class and communicate through notes. Other students such as Kana Suouin and Yukari Kamioka also form meaningful bonds with him, and Mizuho’s kindness often helps them through their own difficulties.
Over the course of the story, Mizuho undergoes noticeable development. He starts as a shy, insecure boy dependent on Mariya but gradually grows more confident in his role at school. His experiences as the Elder, his deepening friendships, and his encounters with various problems teach him to take initiative and care for others beyond his own worries. He learns to balance his secret with his desire to be genuine.
Mizuho’s notable abilities include his naturally androgynous appearance, which makes his cross-dressing convincing, and his athletic talent, which impresses his peers in physical education. He is also academically capable and shows a willingness to help others, often putting their needs before his own. His emotional intelligence and compassion allow him to connect with a wide range of characters, from the ghost-like Ichiko Takashima to the energetic Yukari. Despite his nerves, he adapts to his unusual circumstances with grace and grows into a respected figure at Seio Girls Academy.
