Description
Kasane is the young protagonist of the interactive anime feature Gensomaden Saiyuki: Kibou no Zaika. She is a human girl with an unusual appearance, characterized by her long turquoise hair typically tied into pigtails and large, gold-yellow eyes. Her small, petite frame suggests she is around fourteen or fifteen years old.

Kasane's background is marked by profound tragedy and neglect. She was born and raised in a small town, living in the slums with her parents. Her father was an abusive drunk, and her mother eventually fled the situation, abandoning Kasane to her father's mercy. The townspeople, aware of her suffering, did nothing to intervene. The situation culminated in tragedy when her father went mad with a knife, ran through the village killing people, and was subsequently apprehended and put to death. This left Kasane completely alone, with the villagers avoiding her rather than offering any help or support. Her wish is not for power itself, but to be accepted by the village that has rejected her.

Her personality is shaped directly by this history of ostracization and loneliness. She is deeply insecure and desperate for affection and a sense of belonging. This desperation fuels her motivations. When she comes into possession of a mysterious heavenly artifact called the Pearl Jade, which fell from the sky and is sought after by many factions including the Sanzo party and Kougaiji's team, she gains a strange power to heal the wounded and injured. Kasane does not hesitate to use this newfound ability to help the villagers who had previously abandoned her. She sees her power as the only way to finally earn their happiness and acceptance, believing that with the Pearl Jade, she can make everyone happy. This leads her to stubbornly refuse requests from Sanzo and his companions to stop using the artifact or to hand it over, as she cannot bear to return to a life of being unwanted and alone.

Her role in the story is as the central figure around whom the conflict revolves. The Sanzo party is tasked with retrieving the Pearl Jade, but the jewel appears to have chosen Kasane as its owner, returning to her when others try to take it. As the story progresses, Kasane's use of the Pearl Jade escalates from healing the injured to reviving a dead man brought to her by the townspeople. This act, however, backfires and exposes the villagers' true nature. A man she had previously healed demonstrates that her power has made him feel no pain and heal almost instantly, a side effect that frightens the community. They turn on her, calling her a monster, a witch, and a youkai, and suggest killing her or forcing her to leave. The manipulation she suffers is compounded when a demon disguised as a monk takes advantage of her vulnerability, offering to take her to a place where people truly need her help.

Key relationships in her story are defined by this tragedy. Her interactions with the Sanzo party, particularly Sanzo and Goku, are adversarial in that they try to stop her, but they ultimately recognize her tragic nature and attempt to save her from the demon's trap. The villagers, who she desperately wants to please, reject and fear her. The false monk manipulates her for his own ends.

Kasane's development is a tragic arc from a hopeful healer seeking acceptance to a victim of the very power she wielded. In a moment of despair, after being rejected by the village and wishing to never return to her old life, the Pearl Jade merges with her body. Ultimately, she is captured by the mantis demon, who uses an ornate knife to cut the Pearl Jade from her chest. The moment the jewel leaves her body, Kasane dies. Her death is framed as a kind of predetermined fate, with the implication that heaven chose this path for her.

Her notable ability, derived from the Pearl Jade, is not simply healing but effectively reliving the dead. However, this power carries a hidden consequence. Those she heals are rendered unable to feel pain and their wounds close almost instantly, a change that ultimately leads the villagers to see her as an unnatural monster rather than a savior.
