Description
Mihoko Fukuji is a third-year student at Kazekoshi Girls' High School and serves as both the captain and ace player of the school's mahjong club. She is known for her exceptionally kind and gentle nature, treating everyone she meets with warmth and consideration. This kindness extends even to opponents: during a match against Kiyosumi High School, she offers her own bento lunch to the hungry Yuuki Kataoka in order to help her calm down. Mihoko is also quick to become emotional, often tearing up when her teammates go out of their way to help her, as she feels a strong sense of personal responsibility for any burdens placed on the team.
Mihoko has a distinctive physical trait: she has heterochromia, with her left eye a reddish-gold color and her right eye a sapphire blue. She keeps her right eye closed at all times out of self-consciousness about the difference, and she never opens it unless she faces a dire situation during a mahjong match. When Mihoko does open both eyes, her perception sharpens dramatically: she can read the discards of her opponents, deduce their hand compositions, and anticipate the flow of the game with near‑perfect accuracy. This ability makes her overwhelming to face, often intimidating her opponents and causing them to avoid direct confrontation. Her enhanced sight essentially allows her to calculate the entire progression of a match, a skill that marks her as a formidable "monster" player.
Off the mahjong table, Mihoko is capable in many domestic tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry, but she is notably inept with technology and struggles to operate computers or other electronics. Despite her tendency to cry easily, she possesses a strong‑willed and brave core, especially when it comes to protecting her club members.
Mihoko's role in the story is that of the ace vanguard for Kazekoshi. She leads the team as its captain and is the top‑ranked player in the Nagano prefecture, having won the prefectural individual tournament. Her performance in the national tournament is a continuation of her high‑level play. A key relationship in her past is with Takei Hisa of Kiyosumi High School. Three years prior to the present plot, Mihoko competed at a tournament where she unknowingly kept both eyes open due to concentration. When she tried to hide her heterochromia afterward, Hisa praised her right eye as "pretty," a moment that left a lasting impression on Mihoko and made her admire Hisa. Mihoko recognizes Hisa despite Hisa having changed her surname, and this history shapes their on‑table interactions.
Throughout Saki: The Nationals, Mihoko remains a supporting character who demonstrates leadership, emotional depth, and a unique mahjong ability tied to her second eye. Her development is subtle, anchored by her growth in accepting her own talent and her protective devotion to her team.
