Description
Akane Nishino is a central figure in the story of The Eminence in Shadow - Lost Echoes, originally introduced as a classmate of Minoru Kageno, the identity of the protagonist Cid Kagenou in his previous life on Earth. She is the daughter of the Nishino Zaibatsu, a powerful conglomerate family, and had a successful career as a child actress before a traumatic kidnapping incident in her junior high years forced her to step away from the public eye.

In her high school years, Akane presented herself as a proper, well-mannered young lady, but this was largely a front. Beneath the facade, she was a scared and troubled girl, deeply traumatized by her past kidnapping and the subsequent scandal. She masked her true self in an attempt to be liked and to avoid being pitied or defined by her past. Her most complicated relationship during this time was with her classmate Minoru Kageno. She initially despised him, not because he would forget her name, but because he never truly looked at her, always seeming to gaze past her toward something else. She actively tried to avoid him.

This dynamic changed dramatically after a second kidnapping attempt. Akane was abducted and, just as one of her captors was about to assault her, she was rescued by a ski-masked vigilante whom she later identified as Minoru. Before fleeing, the vigilante told her to be careful not to get kidnapped again. The following day, Minoru correctly remembered her name for the first time, shocking Akane and leading her to realize that he, like her, was also masking his true self. She became intensely interested in him, spending time watching him from a distance and developing profound romantic feelings for him. Tragically, their relationship was cut short by Minoru's sudden death in a traffic accident. His death deeply affected Akane; she kept his old school uniform, yearning for his return for years to come.

Approximately three years after Minoru's death, a disaster struck Earth as a rift to another world caused magical beasts to invade Japan. In the ensuing chaos, Akane became a test subject for a project to create superhuman warriors known as Knights. The project was a success, granting her magical abilities, and she was hailed as the First Knight. However, her older brother, Akira Nishino, continued with cruel experiments, injecting her with the blood of multiple magical beasts to enhance her power. This caused Akane to lose control and go on a destructive rampage, completely destroying the settlement of Arcadia and causing numerous deaths. The trauma from this event was so immense that she suppressed her memories of it, but the guilt manifested as suicidal tendencies and an extremely high regard for human life, vowing to protect others at all costs.

Years later, now twenty years old and a respected captain within the survivor organization Messiah, Akane led a mission to an abandoned hospital. There, she discovered two survivors: a girl named Natsume and a boy who gave his name as Minoru. Struck by the boy's resemblance to her deceased classmate, she took him under her care. During a subsequent magical beast stampede, Akane fought valiantly but was overwhelmed until a figure in jet-black robes appeared and saved her. The nurse at Messiah, Yuuka, was secretly a survivor of Arcadia seeking revenge. She kidnapped Akane and injected her with magical beast blood, causing her to revert to her berserk First Knight state and recover her lost memories. As she rampaged, the Black Knight reappeared, effortlessly subdued her, and spoke the same words Minoru had said to her years ago: to be careful not to get kidnapped again. Before losing consciousness, Akane realized that the Black Knight was Minoru, somehow alive.

After this incident, she was transported to the other world by the elven warrior Beta. Upon waking, Akane was overjoyed to know Minoru was alive and vowed to atone for her past sins before reuniting with him. She eventually joined Shadow Garden, believing Minoru was being held and experimented on by the organization. She was given the callsign No. 712, becoming a unique member of Shadow Garden who is not possessed by demonic possession.

Akane is a powerful magic user on Earth, though her abilities are far inferior to those of Shadow Garden's elite members. Her magic manifests as a golden color, and she primarily uses it to enhance her swordsmanship with a katana, capable of cutting down dozens of magical beasts in a single strike. Her most notable but unstable ability is her First Knight state, triggered by the magical beast blood in her system. In this state, her hair turns golden blonde, her magical power increases dramatically, and she can fire powerful beams of light. While she initially had no control over this berserk form, after arriving in the other world she began training to master it. She also possesses a sharp intelligence, particularly in understanding Earth's technology, which is far beyond the comprehension of most in the other world. Her defining motivation is her deep, enduring love for Minoru Kageno, who inspired her to become a hero who could save people in despair, just as he saved her.
