Description
"Android Kikaider - The Animation" is a 2000 anime series based on the 1972 manga by Shotaro Ishinomori. The story centers on Jiro, an android created by Dr. Komyoji to combat the evil organization DARK, which seeks to dominate humanity through advanced robotics. Jiro is equipped with a "Conscience Circuit," a unique program that grants him a sense of morality and the ability to distinguish right from wrong. However, this circuit is incomplete, leaving Jiro in a constant struggle to control his darker impulses.
The narrative begins with Jiro awakening in a remote laboratory after Dr. Komyoji is captured by DARK. Jiro is tasked with protecting the scientist's children, Mitsuko and Masaru, while searching for the missing components of his Conscience Circuit. Along the way, Jiro encounters a variety of adversaries, including other androids created by DARK, each designed with specialized abilities to counter him. These battles often force Jiro to confront his own identity and the ethical implications of his existence.
Mitsuko and Masaru play significant roles in the story, serving as emotional anchors for Jiro. Mitsuko, in particular, develops a close bond with him, often questioning whether Jiro's emotions are genuine or merely programmed. Masaru, younger and more impulsive, provides a contrasting perspective, viewing Jiro as a protector and friend. Their interactions highlight the series' exploration of humanity, artificial intelligence, and the blurred lines between man and machine.
DARK, led by the enigmatic Professor Gill, serves as the primary antagonist. The organization's goal is to create a world where androids replace humans, and they view Jiro as a threat to their plans. Professor Gill, a former colleague of Dr. Komyoji, is driven by a desire for power and control, often manipulating others to achieve his goals. His creations, including the powerful android Hakaider, serve as recurring obstacles for Jiro.
The series delves into themes of identity, free will, and the nature of humanity. Jiro's incomplete Conscience Circuit symbolizes the internal conflict between his programmed purpose and his emerging sense of self. This struggle is further complicated by his interactions with humans, who often fear or misunderstand him. The narrative also examines the ethical dilemmas of creating sentient beings, particularly when those beings are used as tools for destruction.
Throughout the series, Jiro's journey is marked by both physical battles and emotional growth. His quest to complete his Conscience Circuit becomes a metaphor for his search for humanity, culminating in a confrontation with Professor Gill and the forces of DARK. The resolution of the story underscores the importance of choice and the potential for redemption, even for beings created with a specific purpose.
