Description
Professor Gill Herbert commands the terrorist organization DARK. He initially partners with robotics expert Dr. Komyoji under false promises of benevolent goals, only to unveil his true objective: world domination using destructive robots called Destructoids. To force Dr. Komyoji's continued cooperation, Gill kidnaps the scientist's daughter Mitsuko. This act prompts Dr. Komyoji to secretly build the android Jiro (Kikaider), equipped with a conscience circuit, to fight DARK.
Gill wields a signature bat-shaped flute that emits high-frequency sounds. This device controls Destructoids and inflicts psychological distress on Jiro, exploiting his incomplete conscience circuit to trigger violent episodes. After Jiro repeatedly thwarts DARK's plans, Gill completes the combat android Hakaider, designed specifically to eliminate Kikaider. He implants Dr. Komyoji's brain into Hakaider for control. However, Hakaider fixates solely on the directive to kill Kikaider, ignoring Gill's other commands and sometimes sabotaging DARK operations.
Kikaider's destruction of DARK's base inflicts fatal injuries on Gill. Surviving scientists transfer Gill's brain into Hakaider's body, merging his consciousness with the android to create Gill-Hakaider. In this new form, he leads the Hakaider Force under the terrorist group SHADOW. Gill-Hakaider targets his son Akira, who possesses blueprints for the superweapon "Giant Devil" (Armageddon Lord) tattooed on his back, intending to use Akira to activate the weapon for global conquest.
During the activation of Armageddon Lord, Gill-Hakaider implants a submission chip in Jiro to override his conscience circuit. Instead, the chip suppresses Jiro's moral restraints, enabling him to act with human-like duality. Jiro subsequently destroys Gill-Hakaider by crushing his brain core during the weapon's self-destruction sequence. Gill's spirit later manifests, aiding SHADOW by providing information about his children to complete the Giant Devil project, confirming his enduring influence.
Gill exhibits megalomania, cruelty, and manipulative tactics, exploiting allies and family—including his children Akira and Rumi—as tools for his ambition. His arrogance manifests in dismissing opposition, though he intermittently attempts to recruit Jiro by emphasizing their creator-weapon connection. He maintains a distinctive appearance: a tall, long-haired figure in a black gown, always carrying his signature flute. After his transformation, he retains Hakaider's mechanical body.
