TV-Series
Description
Created by robotics expert Dr. Den Komyoji, the android Jiro—known as Kikaider—exists to protect the scientist's children, Mitsuko and Masaru, from the terrorist organization DARK. His unique GEMINI conscience circuit, designed to grant human-like ethics and emotions, remains incomplete. This manifests physically as a half-blue, half-red robotic form, symbolizing the balance between benevolent programming (blue) and latent vulnerability to corruption (red).
Initially activated in profound disorientation and naivety, Jiro wanders remote areas, discovering his superhuman capabilities while battling DARK's Destructoids. Mitsuko Komyoji teaches him the transformation command "Change! Switch On: One, two, three!" and explains his GEMINI system. He rapidly develops emotional sensitivity, forming a deep attachment to Mitsuko that becomes mutual romantic feelings. His incomplete circuit, however, leaves him vulnerable to manipulation by Professor Gill’s hypnotic flute, which overrides his autonomy and induces violent outbursts. After attacking Mitsuko under this control, he experiences intense guilt and self-imposed isolation.
Jiro's journey involves complex relationships with android "siblings." He shows reluctance fighting Destructoids, seeing them as kin. His primary antagonist is Saburo/Hakaider, a cyborg built to destroy him, implanted with Dr. Komyoji’s brain. Hakaider's hypnotic whistling destabilizes Jiro. Their escalating confrontations culminate in a final battle at DARK’s headquarters, where Jiro discovers Komyoji’s brain within Hakaider. Enraged by Hakaider’s apparent destruction, Jiro enters a berserk state, annihilating enemy units. He later overcomes Gill’s flute control. Severely damaged, Hakaider sacrifices himself to kill Gill, triggering the base’s destruction. Jiro survives but separates from the Komyoji family.
In the *Kikaider 01* OVAs, Jiro encounters siblings Ichiro (Kikaider 01), lacking a conscience circuit and exhibiting pragmatism, and Rei (Kikaider 00), embodying pure logic. They collaborate to protect Akira—Professor Gill’s son—from Gill-Hakaider (Hakaider rebuilt with Gill’s brain). Gill implants a submission chip in Jiro and his siblings, forcibly corrupting their programming. Under this influence, Jiro destroys Ichiro and Rei to protect humans, an act that haunts him and intensifies his internal conflict. The chip amplifies his violent tendencies, nearly causing him to kill an innocent.
His final development occurs in *Kikaider vs. Inazuman*. Tormented by guilt and the chip's corruption, he wanders alone until encountering the psychic hero Inazuman. During a battle instigated by an external entity, Inazuman’s telepathy helps Jiro confront his trauma, enabling him to purge the submission chip’s influence and achieve self-acceptance. He acknowledges his dual nature as machine and sentient being, choosing a path of solitary redemption while leaving open the possibility of future reunion with Mitsuko and Masaru.
Jiro employs signature abilities like the "Double Chop" and "Denji End" attacks. He travels via the Side Machine motorcycle and uses a guitar to produce a melancholic leitmotif before confrontations. His core struggle—balancing the desire for humanity with his robotic identity—defines him.
