Description
Steven Jay Blum is an American voice actor recognized for his distinctively deep voice and prolific career in anime, animation, and video games. Born on April 29, 1960, in Santa Monica, California, he began his career in the entertainment industry in the early 1990s, often using the pseudonym David Lucas for some of his early anime credits. His entry into voice acting came through a job in a film studio's mailroom, where his deep voice led to an opportunity working on an anime project.
Blum's anime filmography is extensive and includes many prominent roles. He is widely known for his portrayal of Spike Spiegel in the classic series Cowboy Bebop and Mugen in Samurai Champloo. He has also voiced major characters in long-running series such as Orochimaru and Zabuza Momochi in the Naruto franchise, Roger Smith in The Big O, and Leeron Littner in Gurren Lagann. Other notable anime roles include Kyoshiro Tohdoh in Code Geass, Kyohei Kadota in Durarara!!, and various characters in the Digimon franchise.
Beyond these well-known parts, Blum has contributed his voice to a wide array of other anime series. His credits include roles in Shinzo, Immortal Grand Prix, Android Kikaider - The Animation, and Goku: Midnight Eye. He also provided voices for English adaptations of series such as Wolf's Rain, Zatch Bell!, and Marvel Anime: X-Men, where he voiced Wolverine. In addition to his work in television series, he has narrated projects like Ōoku: The Inner Chambers. Throughout his career, he has occasionally been credited under pseudonyms such as David Lucas, particularly in his earlier work.
Blum's work is characterized by his frequent casting in leading and supporting roles across a broad spectrum of animated entertainment. His achievements in the industry were recognized in 2012 when he received a Guinness World Record for being the most prolific video game voice actor, a testament to his extensive body of work that spans numerous franchises. In addition to his anime roles, he is also the long-standing voice of TOM, the host of Cartoon Network's Toonami programming block.
