Description
Cain McDonnell leads the Super Five Field Guardians and stands as a primary antagonist. This 13-year-old, born February 26, stands 162 cm tall, weighs 45 kg, and has blood type AB. His appearance features bright red and blonde hair. Initially clad in a gray full-body suit with a white and blue overcoat bearing the Five Field Guardian insignia, his attire shifts to darker colors with black and yellow shoulder plates adorned with red diamond designs after he aligns with the Neo Shadow Alliance. He is left-handed, shown in childhood flashbacks writing with his left hand and positioning his B-DaPocket on the left side.
His traumatic childhood under an abusive, severely strict father and the implied death of his mother fostered a deep-seated hatred for happiness and teamwork, leading him to value power above all else. Cain initially presented himself as honorable and sportsmanlike, feigning respect for B-Daman and camaraderie to manipulate others. His true nature is self-centered, manipulative, and devoid of empathy, evident in his exploitation of his best friend Joshua. He orchestrated schemes like the staged kidnapping of Marilyn and a false battle with Joshua to destroy Yamato’s Cobalt Blade.
Cain wields three primary B-Daman: the meticulously maintained Knight Cavalry; the Black Knight, revealed after destroying Cobalt Blade; and Lord Cavalry, used during his Neo Shadow Alliance tenure. His B-DaBalls are yellow, consistent with the Super Five. After joining the Neo Shadow Alliance, he advocated brainwashing adversaries like Li and confronted former allies. His battles often employed psychological cruelty, deliberately destroying a childhood B-DaBall gifted by Joshua to provoke Gray or missing shots to humiliate opponents. His rivalry with Enjyu stemmed from their shared fixation on power, clashing due to Cain’s manipulative tendencies versus Enjyu’s lone-wolf demeanor.
In the manga continuity, Cain invited Yamato’s team to "B-DaWorld," a theme park he claimed affiliation with via the Association’s West Branch. There, he sabotaged matches and infrastructure, revealing himself as the mastermind behind attacks on Yamato and his allies. During the Dragon Stage battle, he manipulated Joshua and used Black Knight’s abilities to force Yamato and Enjyu into self-destructive clashes. His defeat came when his Boost Magnum backfired, destroying Black Knight. Joshua’s intervention and subsequent slap prompted Cain’s fleeting moment of realization about his distorted values. Months later, he attended the Masters Winners Tournament as a spectator, dismissing the venue as inferior to B-DaWorld.
His downfall culminated in a battle against Gray aboard the Neo Shadow Alliance Harrier. Provoked by Gray’s revelations about his past and Joshua’s refusal to aid him, Cain descended into madness and was defeated. The loss shattered him emotionally, leading to his final appearance in a wheelchair during the conflict against Marda Biarce. Clad in his original attire, he witnessed the snowfall of B-Daman souls, with one landing in his hand as Yamato triumphed, a moment hinting at subdued reflection before Joshua escorted him away. Later, during the Battle B-Daman: Fire Spirits! era, he appeared in the audience alongside Joshua, supporting Yamato’s team against B-Deus.
