TV-Series
Description
Kenta Kitagawa is one of the main supporting characters in the third Digimon series. He is a close friend of Takato Matsuki, the primary protagonist, and is part of the same group of children who share a passion for the Digimon card game.

In terms of background, Kenta is introduced as an enthusiastic but not particularly skilled player of the Digi-Battle Card Game, frequently losing to his friend and rival, Kazu Shioda. He joins his friends on their adventure into the Digital World, partly out of a sense of excitement and partly due to feeling left out, as he is one of the last members of the group without a Digimon partner of his own. This feeling of jealousy and sadness about being partnerless is a key part of his early journey, leading him to temporarily pretend that Guilmon, Takato's partner, is his own when they become separated from the group.

Kenta's personality is defined by his friendly and good-natured demeanor. He is often seen alongside Kazu, and the two function as a comedic duo, providing levity. Kenta is frequently portrayed as the straight man to Kazu's more boisterous antics, and he often gets credit for the jokes Kazu tells, as he is usually in on them. While he can be meek and insecure compared to the core Tamers, he is also logical and shows moments of quiet courage and intelligence. His initial insecurity is rooted in the fear of being the only one without a partner, a feeling that motivates him to join the dangerous mission to the Digital World.

Kenta's role in the story shifts from a background friend to an active participant when he finally obtains his partner. In the Digital World, he and Kazu meet and befriend ancient Digimon named Jijimon and Babamon, at one point pretending to be Digimon themselves for their entertainment. He also expresses great admiration for Ryo Akiyama, a legendary Tamer known as the Digimon King. However, his most significant moment comes just as the Tamers are preparing to return to the real world. A small, pink, Mega-level Digimon named MarineAngemon falls from the sky and takes an immediate liking to him. Though Kenta initially shoos it away, MarineAngemon later appears in his back pocket, complete with its own Digivice, officially becoming his partner. This event makes Kenta the only Tamer whose partner is already at its ultimate Mega level.

The relationship between Kenta and MarineAngemon is unique and affectionate. Despite MarineAngemon only being able to say a few sounds like Pu, Kenta demonstrates a remarkable ability to understand its feelings and intentions, a fact that amazes Kazu. MarineAngemon is a peaceful Digimon that dislikes fighting, but its special attack, Ocean Love, proves to be a crucial asset against the D-Reaper, as its love-based nature is a powerful counter to the enemy's negative emotions. Kenta and MarineAngemon play a key role in rescuing Takato and the others from the D-Reaper's clutches, showing that even the most unassuming members of the group can make a significant difference.

Kenta's development throughout the series is a journey from being an envious observer to a proud and capable Tamer. He begins the series as a boy who merely follows his friends, but by the end, he has his own unique bond with a powerful Digimon. He learns that having a partner is not about strength alone, as MarineAngemon, despite being a Mega, is small and non-aggressive. His notable ability is less about physical combat and more about his unique empathetic connection with MarineAngemon and his role as a supportive and reliable friend who helps when the main fighters are in peril. In the film Digimon Tamers: Runaway Locomon, he and his partner continue to work alongside the other Tamers to defend the real world from new threats.
