Description
Jake Martinez is a major antagonist from the anime Tiger & Bunny, first appearing as a long-term prisoner with a 250-year sentence at Abbas Prison. At 38 years old, he is an incredibly powerful NEXT, a human with superhuman abilities, and stands out as one of the rarest cases of an individual possessing two distinct powers.

Born on March 30, Martinez holds a supremacist ideology, believing that NEXT are the chosen next stage of human evolution and are inherently superior to ordinary humans. His primary motivation is to create a utopia where NEXT rule over the world, with himself as their leader. He views non-NEXT lives with contempt and little value, and is willing to commit murder on a massive scale to achieve his goals. In battle, he is arrogant and boastful, taunting his opponents while relying heavily on his telepathic abilities. However, this arrogance masks a cowardly nature; when confronted with a genuine threat, such as when hero Barnaby Brooks Jr. proves capable of beating him, Martinez chooses to flee rather than stand his ground.

Within the story, Martinez serves as the primary villain for a significant arc. After his organization, believed to be Ouroboros, threatens to destroy Sternbild City, he is released from prison as a ransom. He becomes a direct personal foe for hero Barnaby Brooks Jr., as Martinez was long believed to be the murderer of Barnaby's parents twenty years prior to the main events. His most significant relationship is with his devoted partner and subordinate, Kriem, who acts as his pilot and loyal follower. Their dynamic has been compared to other villainous duos, with Kriem developing a deep attachment to him after he kidnapped her as a child and indoctrinated her with his beliefs.

A key development in the story involves the revelation surrounding Martinez's past. While he is a brutal criminal who kidnapped the young Kriem for ransom, it is ultimately revealed that he was not the one who killed Barnaby's parents. The true culprit was another character who manipulated the evidence and memories to frame him. This revelation adds complexity to his role as a nemesis. In terms of character development, the anime presents him as a largely static, chaotic force for evil, but the manga adaptation expands on this by providing a flashback to his childhood that offers insight into his motivations, making him a more sympathetic character.

Martinez possesses two rare and powerful NEXT abilities. His primary offensive power appears to be the generation and projection of energy lasers, but this is a deception. His true first ability is the creation of powerful, invisible barriers. He can shape these barriers into small, marble-sized orbs to flick at opponents like bullets, which created the illusion of laser fire, or generate large defensive shields that can withstand powerful attacks. His second and most dangerous ability is telepathy, which allows him to read the minds of others within a certain range. This allows him to anticipate his enemies' every move, making him nearly impossible to defeat through direct combat. The hero Wild Tiger exploited the weakness of this power, realizing that Martinez could not read the thoughts he did not consciously form, leading to his eventual defeat. His reliance on this ability and his lack of any exceptional physical fighting skills make him vulnerable when his mind reading is circumvented.
