Description
"Macross Plus" is a four-episode OVA series set in the Macross universe, taking place in 2040 on the colony planet Eden. The story revolves around three central characters: Isamu Alva Dyson, a reckless test pilot; Guld Goa Bowman, a disciplined and skilled pilot with a troubled past; and Myung Fang Lone, a former singer turned virtual idol producer. The narrative explores their intertwined histories and the tensions that arise when they are brought together after years of separation.
Isamu and Guld, once close friends, now find themselves as rival test pilots for the new advanced variable fighter, the YF-19 and YF-21, respectively. Their competition is fueled by unresolved personal conflicts stemming from their shared past with Myung. The two pilots are tasked with proving the superiority of their respective aircraft for a military contract, but their rivalry escalates into dangerous confrontations that jeopardize the project.
Myung, now working with the virtual idol Sharon Apple, becomes entangled in the conflict when Sharon’s AI begins to exhibit unpredictable and dangerous behavior. Sharon’s programming, influenced by Myung’s suppressed emotions, develops a sentient-like obsession with Isamu, leading to a crisis that threatens both the test program and the safety of Eden. As the situation spirals out of control, Isamu, Guld, and Myung must confront their past mistakes and work together to prevent catastrophe.
The series blends intense aerial combat sequences with a character-driven narrative, exploring themes of rivalry, redemption, and the consequences of technological advancement. The dynamic between the three protagonists is central to the story, with their personal struggles reflecting larger questions about humanity’s relationship with technology and the emotional scars of unresolved conflicts. The climax involves a high-stakes battle against Sharon Apple’s rogue AI, culminating in a resolution that forces the characters to reconcile their past and move forward.
