Megumi Hayashibara

Description
Megumi Hayashibara, born on March 30, 1967, in Tokyo, is a highly celebrated Japanese voice actress and singer. She is widely regarded as one of the most prominent and influential figures in the anime industry, with a career spanning from the late 1980s to the present day. Initially, Hayashibara trained and qualified as a registered nurse, a path she pursued alongside her early forays into voice acting. Her entry into the industry was serendipitous; while submitting an application for nursing school, she came across an advertisement for free voice acting auditions, which she decided to pursue.

Hayashibara's professional debut came in 1986 with minor roles in the series Maison Ikkoku. Her first major, career-defining role arrived in 1989 when she was cast as the female voice of the titular character in Ranma ½, a part that brought her widespread recognition. This success established her as a leading voice actress and opened the door to a remarkable succession of iconic characters throughout the 1990s and beyond. Among her most famous and enduring roles are the stoic Rei Ayanami in Neon Genesis Evangelion, the fiery and powerful Lina Inverse in the Slayers franchise, the mysterious Faye Valentine in Cowboy Bebop, and the brilliant but haunted Ai Haibara in the long-running series Detective Conan. She is also beloved by generations of fans as Musashi, known internationally as Jessie, the ever-dramatic member of Team Rocket in the Pokémon anime, a role for which she also provided the voices for numerous Pokémon themselves. Her versatility extends to voicing male characters, such as Shuichi Saihara in Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.

Throughout her prolific career, Hayashibara has demonstrated a remarkable ability to inhabit a vast spectrum of characters, from young boys and energetic girls to cool, collected women and even purely vocal animal roles, a technique she has described as allowing the character to inhabit her. Her long-standing collaborations with creators like Rumiko Takahashi (on series such as Ranma ½ and the Rumiko Takahashi Anthology) and Yuzo Takada (on projects like 3x3 Eyes and All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku) are a testament to her skill and reliability. In 2001, she voiced Anna Kyōyama in the first Shaman King anime, a role she reprised over two decades later for the 2021 remake, showcasing her enduring connection to these characters.

In addition to her voice work, Hayashibara is a highly successful singer and lyricist, often performing theme songs for the anime series in which she stars. Her music career, launched in 1991, has been remarkably successful, with numerous albums charting in the top ten on the Oricon charts. She has won the Animage magazine's Grand Prix award for most popular female voice actor an unprecedented twelve times, a testament to her sustained popularity and impact. In 1998, she founded her own talent management agency, Woodpark Office, to manage her career independently.
