Description
Christina Mackenzie was born in UC 0058 in Side 6's Ribo colony, living there with her parents. Her upbringing suggested her parents initially desired a son, fostering her tomboyish personality and ability to stand up to boys her age. She played baseball as a child, keeping her bat as an adult memento. After high school, she enrolled in the Federation Space Force Academy in September UC 0076, graduating first in her class in 0078. Though she aspired to be a fighter pilot and join the elite War Technology Research Group, the outbreak of the One Year War changed her path.
Assigned to a test squadron under the Space Force Integrated Technology Research Headquarters, her piloting skills impressed superiors despite her rookie status. When the unit reorganized into the G-4 unit, she became the designated test pilot for the RX-78NT-1 Gundam Alex. Officially a computer engineer, not a combat pilot, her role was that of a "shoe-fitter," adjusting the Alex's learning computer to match the intended pilot's capabilities. This assignment took her to Jaburo and later the Federation's Montana Base for pilot evaluations.
At Montana Base, she encountered Chuck Keith, an impulsive pilot whose incompetence during a test flight caused the G-IV to crash. During the retrieval, she discovered Chuck had accidentally activated the suit's combat mode because its learning computer couldn't distinguish simulation from reality. She intervened to prevent casualties, physically restraining Chuck and disarming the unit. After Chuck's failure, the G-IV was assigned to Margaret. Christina developed a friendship with Margaret. When Margaret disappeared during a test, Christina defied orders and personally searched for her piloting a refurbished MS-06 Zaku II. During the search, she confronted Zeon forces and discovered Margaret was a Zeon spy. Their battle left Christina wounded and unconscious, but Margaret's hesitation allowed Yuki Nishioka to eliminate her. Despite her injuries, Christina volunteered to replace Margaret as the G-IV test pilot, gaining approval following endorsement from the Argon unit.
Transferred to the Arctic and later to Side 6's Ribo colony, she continued testing the Alex. Engineers noted the suit's sensitivity was ill-suited for her as a non-Newtype, as it was designed for Amuro Ray. In Ribo, she reunited with her young neighbor, Alfred Izuruha, whom she had babysat and who viewed her as an older sister figure. One night, mistaking Bernard Wiseman for a burglar, she knocked him unconscious with her baseball bat. Al identified Bernie as his "stepbrother," leading to a friendship and mutual attraction between Christina and Bernie. Neither knew the other's true role: she concealed her status as the Alex's test pilot, claiming only to handle data gathering, while Bernie hid his membership in Zeon's Cyclops Team, tasked with destroying the Alex.
On December 19, UC 0079, the Cyclops Team attacked the Federation base. When Mikhail Kaminsky's MS-18E Kämpfer rampaged through the colony, Christina piloted the Alex to stop him. Despite the destruction of the Alex's Chobam Armor by a chain mine, she defeated the Kämpfer using its gatling guns. Her superiors reprimanded her for urban combat, though she argued it prevented greater casualties. Bernie, the sole survivor of his team, later learned of Zeon's plan to nuke Side 6 if the Alex remained operational. On December 25, he launched a solo attack in a Zaku II to avert the bombardment. Christina, unaware of his identity or motives, sortied in the Alex to defend the colony. To minimize civilian risk, she deliberately engaged him in a forested area. Bernie used Christmas balloons and smoke bombs to close in, damaging the Alex's arm and cockpit with his heat axe. In their final clash, Christina impaled the Zaku's cockpit with her beam saber, killing Bernie. The explosion incapacitated the Alex, and Al witnessed the aftermath.
After recovering, Christina prepared to return to Earth. She asked Al to say goodbye to Bernie for her, remaining unaware she had killed him. Al kept the truth from her. Nearly three months later, she wrote to Al, inquiring about Bernie's well-being, reminiscing about their first meeting, and expressing regret for hitting him with the bat. She mentioned uncertainty about leaving the military but hoped to reunite with Al and Bernie to travel together.
Physically, Christina had red hair, green eyes, and stood 165 cm tall. Described as a "girl next door" beauty, she combined a mild-mannered appearance with assertiveness, strong-mindedness, and a deep sense of responsibility. Her technical aptitude and piloting skills were exceptional, though she struggled with the Alex's Newtype-oriented systems.
