Description
Anna Kyōyama is a central figure in the Shaman King series, known for her role as the fiancée and later wife of the protagonist, Yoh Asakura. She is an itako, a traditional Japanese shaman who specializes in channeling and summoning spirits, a practice rooted in the folklore of the Aomori Prefecture in Japan.
Anna’s background is marked by a difficult childhood. She was abandoned by her birth parents because they were afraid of her innate and uncontrollable shamanic powers, particularly her ability to read the hearts and minds of others, known as Reishi. Found and taken in by Yoh's grandmother, Kino Asakura, she was given the surname Kyōyama, which is an alternate reading of the name for Mount Osore, the place where she was discovered. This early trauma of abandonment and her inability to block out the negative thoughts of those around her led her to develop a deep-seated resentment towards others. This negativity would involuntarily manifest as violent oni, or demonic spirits, that she could not control.
Her life changed dramatically when she met Yoh Asakura at the age of ten. Yoh, with his easygoing and accepting nature, was not frightened by the oni that followed her. He persistently tried to befriend her, and his positive influence helped her begin to open her heart. The defining moment of their childhood came when the oni spawned from her emotions grew into a powerful, sentient Oh-Oni that kidnapped her. Yoh, with the help of the spirit Matamune, risked his life to save her. In that moment, Anna acknowledged that she had grown to love Yoh, and his actions finally freed her from the darkness that had haunted her. Grateful for being saved, she resolved to dedicate herself to him. The Asakura family, recognizing her immense potential, had already arranged for her to be Yoh’s bride.
Anna’s personality is defined by a sharp contrast between an aggressive, cold exterior and a deeply caring, loyal interior. To most people, she appears harsh, pragmatic, and decisive, often speaking in a blunt and commanding tone. This is especially true in her relationship with Yoh, whom she subjects to brutal training regimens that he and others frequently describe as torture. However, this harshness stems from her absolute belief in Yoh’s destiny to become the Shaman King and her sense of duty as his wife to prepare him for the dangers ahead. Beneath her intimidating facade, she genuinely loves Yoh, a fact she has openly admitted, and she becomes hysterical at the thought of losing him. She is also fiercely possessive and can be jealous, as seen when she mistook a communication device for a woman's pager.
Her primary motivation is to become the ultimate Shaman Queen alongside Yoh. While she claims this is so she can live a comfortable and relaxed life, it is deeply intertwined with her desire to repay Yoh for saving her and to support his dream. In the story, she functions as Yoh’s primary trainer and a formidable protector of his allies. She shows little to no fear of the primary antagonist, Hao Asakura, even slapping him, an act that only serves to intrigue him. Her role evolves from a demanding mentor to a protective wife and, in later series, a mother to their son, Hana Asakura.
Anna’s spiritual abilities are extraordinary, even by the standards of powerful shamans. Her signature technique as an itako is Kuchiyose, the ability to summon any spirit from the afterlife, including from heaven, with only a small amount of information about them. Her most notable feat of strength is when she effortlessly sealed and took control of Zenki and Kouki, Hao’s incredibly powerful shikigami guardian spirits, and made them her own. She also wields a special set of 1,080 prayer beads, forged from the corpse of the Oh-Oni she and Yoh defeated as children, which she uses as a tool for spiritual combat. Despite losing her uncontrollable childhood ability to read minds after her ordeal on Mount Osore, she remains a formidable combatant, also possessing surprising physical strength. Her powerful slaps, particularly her "legendary left hand," are infamous among the series' characters for their ability to subdue anyone, including Yoh.
