Description
Megumi Amatsuka is the central protagonist of Tenshi na Konamaiki. At the age of nine, Megumi was an aggressive and rough‑and‑tumble boy who dreamed of becoming the manliest man on earth. After saving a strange man from a gang of children, Megumi received a magical book. When blood accidentally fell on the book, a trickster genie named Pierrot appeared and offered a wish. Megumi wished to be a strong, manly man, but Pierrot mischievously transformed Megumi into a girl. Furious, Megumi threw the book into a river and spent the next six years searching for it, believing that retrieving the book would reverse the spell.
By the time the story begins, Megumi is a fifteen‑year‑old student at Kengamine High School. Physically, she is an attractive girl with long blonde hair and brown eyes, standing 167 cm tall. Despite her feminine appearance, she retains all of her original masculine mannerisms, a brash and confrontational personality, and formidable fighting abilities. On her first day of high school, she immediately beats up the school bully, who then falls in love with her. Her tomboyish behavior and strength attract a group of misfit admirers known as the Megu‑chan Protection Club.
Megumi is fiercely independent, assertive, and often quick to deny any display of affection. She is extremely protective of her best friend Miki, whom she has known since preschool after scaring away a boy who was tormenting Miki with a bug. The two spend a great deal of time together, and Megumi’s feelings toward Miki are ambiguous; it is unclear whether she harbors a romantic crush or simply a strong platonic bond. Among the many male admirers at school, the one who makes the most progress is Genzo Souga, the school bully she initially defeated. Genzo’s relentless determination to prove himself to Megumi eventually leads to a developing relationship, though Megumi often denies any romantic interest.
Megumi’s primary motivation throughout the series is to find the magical book so she can return to being a boy. This quest drives much of the plot and leads her into various comedic and action‑packed situations. However, a major revelation occurs later in the story: Megumi was never actually a boy. The genie altered her memories, making her believe she had originally been male. In truth, as a young girl she had wished to become a boy after being saved from falling glass by Genzo. This twist forces Megumi to reconsider her identity and her desire to change back, marking a significant moment of character development as she comes to terms with who she really is.
Megumi’s notable abilities lie in her exceptional physical strength and combat skills, which she uses frequently to defend herself and those close to her. She is a natural leader in fights, fearless and quick to act. Her growth over the course of the series involves moving from a single‑minded focus on reversing the transformation toward a more nuanced understanding of her own identity, relationships, and the value of the life she has.
