Description
"Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance" is the second installment in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, a reimagining of the original "Neon Genesis Evangelion" anime. The story continues the conflict between humanity and the mysterious beings known as Angels, with the organization NERV deploying giant biomechanical mechas called Evangelions to combat the threats. Shinji Ikari, the reluctant pilot of Unit-01, returns alongside Rei Ayanami, the enigmatic pilot of Unit-00, and is joined by Asuka Langley Shikinami, a fiery and confident pilot assigned to Unit-02.
The narrative begins with the introduction of Asuka, who arrives in Japan to support NERV's efforts. Her assertive personality contrasts sharply with Shinji's introverted demeanor, creating tension and rivalry between the two. Meanwhile, Rei begins to exhibit subtle changes in behavior, showing a growing sense of individuality and emotional connection to Shinji. The trio is tasked with defending Tokyo-3 from a series of increasingly powerful Angels, including a massive Angel that requires the synchronized efforts of all three Evangelions to defeat.
As the battles intensify, the film introduces new elements to the story, such as the mysterious Mark.06 Evangelion and the arrival of Mari Illustrious Makinami, a freelance pilot who briefly takes control of Unit-02. Mari's motives and background remain unclear, adding an additional layer of intrigue. The plot also delves deeper into the relationships between the characters, particularly Shinji's strained connection with his father, Gendo Ikari, and his growing bond with Rei.
A pivotal moment occurs when Shinji disobeys orders to rescue Rei during a critical mission, resulting in a catastrophic event that threatens the world. This act of defiance highlights Shinji's internal struggle between his desire for approval and his growing sense of agency. The film concludes with a dramatic cliffhanger, setting the stage for the next installment in the series. Throughout the story, themes of identity, human connection, and the consequences of choice are explored, maintaining the psychological depth that defines the Evangelion franchise.
