Description
Kōzō Fuyutsuki is the Vice Commander of the special agency NERV, serving as the second-in-command of NERV Headquarters and the closest aide to Commander Gendō Ikari. In the film Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, Fuyutsuki is portrayed as a calm, intelligent, and reserved man who handles much of NERV’s administrative work and takes command whenever Gendō is absent. He is distinguishable by his gray hair, gaunt face, and long gray uniform, and he carries himself with a composed, analytical demeanor.
Fuyutsuki was formerly a professor of metaphysical biology at Kyoto University, where he first met Yui Ikari when she was a brilliant bioengineering student. He developed a deep, unspoken affection for her, though he never acted on his feelings. Through Yui he also encountered Gendō Rokubungi (later Gendō Ikari), a man Fuyutsuki initially found distasteful. After the Second Impact in 2000, Fuyutsuki lost his academic career and worked as an unlicensed doctor in the ruins of Toyohashi. In 2002 he was selected for a United Nations expedition to the South Pole, where he uncovered evidence that the true cause of the Second Impact was being concealed. Determined to expose the truth, he investigated Gendō and the secret organization SEELE, eventually confronting Gendō. Gendō revealed the Geofront and the Evangelion project, and under threat of elimination by SEELE, Fuyutsuki was effectively compelled to join the precursor organization Gehirn. He later became NERV’s Vice Commander.
In Evangelion: 2.0, Fuyutsuki’s background is not directly detailed on screen, but his role is that of Gendō’s trusted confidant and co-conspirator. Whereas in the original series he often appeared as a reluctant follower, in the Rebuild films he is more visibly involved in Gendō’s plans and shares an understanding of their deeper objectives. He appears alongside Gendō during the inspection of Evangelion Mark.06 on the moon and is present in the command center for most major operations. His personality is consistently low-key; he rarely displays strong emotions, though he can show frustration or disapproval when events go poorly, such as after a sloppy battle against an Angel. He values order and competence, and is known to be less harsh than Gendō, occasionally tempering the commander’s more extreme tendencies.
Fuyutsuki’s primary motivation is his lingering attachment to Yui Ikari and his desire to see her again, which aligns him with Gendō’s goal of bringing about the Human Instrumentality Project. He also appears to hold a personal conviction that a world with people living in it, even stained with sin, is preferable to an empty one. Despite his close working relationship with Gendō, their alliance is one of convenience and shared interest rather than genuine friendship. Fuyutsuki maintains a cool, observational distance from the younger pilots, referring to Shinji merely as “Ikari’s son” and showing little personal warmth toward Asuka or Rei.
In terms of abilities, Fuyutsuki is an accomplished administrator and strategist. He is knowledgeable in metaphysical biology and the technical aspects of the Evangelion project, and he can effectively coordinate NERV’s resources during battles. His calm judgment makes him a stabilizing presence in crisis situations, and he is entrusted by Gendō with handling mundane but essential tasks such as paperwork and liaison with external authorities.
Across Evangelion: 2.0, Fuyutsuki undergoes no dramatic personal change, but his role as a key insider who understands the stakes of the conflict is reinforced. He remains a steady, if morally ambiguous, figure who facilitates Gendō’s schemes while also preserving a thread of humanistic idealism inherited from Yui. His development continues in later films, but within 2.0 he functions primarily as the composed, knowledgeable lieutenant who keeps NERV running behind the scenes.
