Jacques Albaret
Description
Jacques Albaret is a French actor primarily known for his extensive work in voice dubbing, particularly for anime series and films. His career in performance began in his youth, with early training at a conservatoire in Clermont-Ferrand, where he won several prizes. He was a founding member of the Théâtre Permanent, a theater company in his home region, before moving to Paris in his late twenties to pursue acting further. In Paris, he continued his theater career, working with companies such as the Compagnie Ivan Morane and with director Jacques Mauclair, and created a solo show about the poet Louis Aragon.
Alongside his stage work, Albaret built a prolific career in dubbing. He has described the craft as highly technical, involving the use of a rhythm band to synchronize dialogue, and has expressed a particular fondness for voicing eccentric or villainous characters. His voice is featured in many notable anime dubs produced for the French market.
Among his most recognized roles is Inspector Zenigata in the 1989 television special Lupin the 3rd: Bye Bye, Lady Liberty. He also voiced Inspector Grosky in the film Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva. In the 2006 science fiction film Origin: Spirits of the Past, he provided the voice for the character Shunack. His role as Shinobu Fujiwara is credited in the God Bless Dancougar OVAs, and he played Dr. Von Vogler in the anime adaptation of Giant Robo. He also took on the role of Eluri in the fantasy OVA series Ellcia. For the French-language version of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVAs, he voiced the protagonist, Jotaro Kujo. More recently, he voiced a character identified as Homme in the film Miss Hokusai.
In addition to these roles, Albaret's dubbing work spans a wide range of other series and films. He is the regular French voice of actor Mitch Pileggi, known for his roles in The X-Files and Sons of Anarchy, and has also dubbed for series such as NCIS. His other prominent anime credits include Vicious in Cowboy Bebop, Folken in The Vision of Escaflowne, Kozo Fuyutsuki in the Rebuild of Evangelion films, and Ryuken in the Fist of the North Star movies.
Beyond voice acting, Jacques Albaret has frequently served as an ADR director for French dubs of anime. His directing credits include the films Origin: Spirits of the Past, Miss Hokusai, and Mai Mai Miracle, as well as the series Basilisk and the Cobra the Animation OVAs. He has also brought his dubbing expertise to the stage, creating and performing a live dubbing show using an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger, which incorporated sound effects and a jazz orchestra.
