Description
Legato Bluesummers is a central antagonist in the anime and manga series Trigun. He is a modified human who serves as the second-in-command to Millions Knives and the de facto leader of the Gung-Ho Guns, a group of elite assassins. His background varies between adaptations. In the original manga, Legato was once a nameless sex slave who developed psychic abilities while imprisoned by weaving metal threads into his own brain. When Knives destroyed the town where he was held, Legato was the sole survivor and immediately devoted himself to Knives, receiving his name and purpose. In the 1998 anime adaptation, no detailed backstory is provided; he is simply recruited by Knives after the catastrophic July incident to torment Vash the Stampede.
Personality-wise, Legato is calm, polite, and outwardly aloof, but harbors a deep sadistic streak. He is described as a straw nihilist who believes that living is inherently painful, and he takes a twisted form of poetic justice in manipulating people into destroying one another. He is utterly devoted and obedient to Knives, viewing him as a god, but holds contempt for humanity, including himself, because he is human. His mantra, "Righteousness is but a convenient lie," reflects his cynical worldview. Legato rarely shows strong emotion, but his obsession with Vash reveals an intense, almost fanatical determination.
Legato’s primary motivation is to cause Vash eternal pain and suffering on Knives’ behalf. This stems from his loyalty and his personal desire to prove his worthiness as Knives’ right hand. He also seeks to break Vash’s pacifist principles, believing that suffering is the only truth. In the manga, his backstory adds a layer of self-loathing and a need to validate his existence through service to Knives.
In the story, Legato acts as the orchestrator of many of Vash’s encounters with the Gung-Ho Guns. He sets up traps and moral dilemmas designed to force Vash to kill or let others die. His most pivotal role comes at the climax, where he uses his powers to threaten the lives of Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, leaving Vash with no choice but to shoot and kill him. This act marks the first time Vash consciously takes a life, fulfilling Legato’s goal of scarring him permanently.
Key relationships define his place in the narrative. His bond with Knives is one of worshipful servitude; he accepts even physical punishment from Knives without resentment. His relationship with Vash is that of a relentless tormentor, driven by obsessive hatred and a desire to prove that Vash’s ideals are hollow. He commands the Gung-Ho Guns as a ruthless boss, with Midvalley the Hornfreak acting as his assistant. He has no personal connection to Meryl and Milly beyond using them as pawns.
Legato undergoes limited development as a character; his arc primarily serves to challenge Vash. In the manga, his past is revealed, giving context to his devotion, and he eventually fights Vash in a final battle where his powers are neutralized. He is defeated and demands Vash kill him, dying with a smile. In the anime, he remains a more one-dimensional sadist, but his death similarly forces Vash to compromise his principles.
Legato’s notable abilities stem from his psychic powers, which allow him to control the bodies and minds of others against their will. He can make victims perform actions, including attacking their own allies, or commit suicide. He can also project mental images into others’ minds and, most significantly, activate Vash’s Angel Arm, triggering its destructive energy. The source of his power is Vash’s left arm, which was grafted onto his body after Knives shot it off. Since Vash is a plant, the arm endowed Legato with psychic capabilities. In the manga, his power is further explained through the use of microscopic metal threads that connect to his brain and extend from a skull-shaped dispenser on his left arm. These threads transmit electrical signals to control muscles, and he can use them to create barriers or manipulate entire populations. Despite these formidable abilities, Legato remains biologically human, making him vulnerable to physical harm that would not affect a plant.
