Description
"Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone" is the first installment in the "Rebuild of Evangelion" film series, a reimagining of the original "Neon Genesis Evangelion" anime. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity faces recurring attacks from mysterious beings known as Angels. To combat this threat, the organization NERV develops giant biomechanical mechas called Evangelions, or EVAs, piloted by specially chosen teenagers.

The protagonist, Shinji Ikari, is a withdrawn and emotionally distant 14-year-old boy summoned to Tokyo-3 by his estranged father, Gendo Ikari, the commander of NERV. Shinji is reluctantly thrust into the role of piloting Unit-01, an EVA synchronized only with his genetic code. Despite his initial reluctance and fear, Shinji is forced to confront the Angels in high-stakes battles, grappling with the physical and psychological toll of piloting the EVA.

Shinji’s interactions with other characters shape much of the narrative. Misato Katsuragi, a NERV operations director, becomes his guardian and provides emotional support, though her own complexities and past trauma influence her behavior. Rei Ayanami, the enigmatic pilot of Unit-00, is a quiet and introspective girl whose connection to Gendo and her role as an EVA pilot raise questions about her origins and purpose. As Shinji struggles to find his place within NERV, he begins to form tentative bonds with Misato and Rei, though their relationships remain fraught with tension and ambiguity.

The film closely follows the events of the original series’ early episodes, with key battles against Angels such as Sachiel and Shamshel. These confrontations highlight the destructive power of the Angels and the immense pressure placed on the young pilots. The narrative also delves into the psychological strain on Shinji, who wrestles with feelings of inadequacy, abandonment, and the fear of failure. His internal struggles are juxtaposed with the broader mystery surrounding NERV’s true objectives and the nature of the EVAs and Angels.

"Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone" sets the stage for the overarching themes of identity, human connection, and existential dread that define the series. It introduces the core conflicts and characters while maintaining a focus on Shinji’s personal journey as he navigates the demands of his role and the emotional scars of his past. The film concludes with a sense of unresolved tension, paving the way for the subsequent installments in the "Rebuild of Evangelion" series.
