Description
Makoto Hyuga is a First Lieutenant at NERV and one of the three primary computer technicians stationed at the organization’s headquarters, alongside Maya Ibuki and Shigeru Aoba. He serves in the Tactical Operations division and acts as the chief aide to Captain Misato Katsuragi, the head of that division. During Angel attacks, Hyuga works at the command console, monitoring battle data and relaying critical information to Misato, who often stands close to him, sometimes resting a hand on his shoulder or the back of his chair as she issues orders.
Hyuga is diligent and hardworking, though he occasionally shows a reckless streak in his efforts to assist Misato. He is also notably resourceful: in situations that require quick thinking, he has commandeered a loudspeaker truck to warn headquarters of an approaching Angel and piloted an aircraft to transport an Evangelion unit during a crisis. Outside of combat, he is something of a nerd, reading manga during his breaks, but this does not detract from his professionalism on the job.
Personally, Hyuga harbors a quiet, unspoken romantic attraction to Misato. He never acts on this feeling or interferes with her personal relationships, and she appears to be aware of it without minding. His devotion to her is deep enough that he once told her, during a moment of extreme crisis, that it is all right as long as he is with her. This one-sided affection is a subtle but consistent thread in his characterization.
In the story of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Hyuga fulfills the same function as in the original series. He is a reliable background presence on the bridge, handling the MAGI computer systems and supporting the Evangelion pilots during their battles. His role is primarily supportive, providing technical expertise and assisting Misato in her command duties. He does not undergo significant personal development within this single film, but his established loyalty and competence remain evident. His notable abilities include fast and accurate data processing, multitasking under pressure, and a willingness to go beyond his standard duties to help his superior uncover the truth behind NERV’s secrets, though the latter is more fully explored in later installments.
