Mike McFarland
Description
Mike McFarland is an American voice actor, ADR director, script writer, and line producer with a career spanning over two decades in the English dubbing of Japanese anime. He was born on July 14, 1970, in Texas City, Texas. McFarland is a key figure at Funimation (now Crunchyroll), where he has been involved in the production of numerous English dub adaptations.
McFarland's career began in the mid-1990s when he was among the first voice actors hired by Funimation for their English dub of the seminal series Dragon Ball Z. He is widely recognized as the original English voice of the iconic martial arts master Master Roshi and the character Yajirobe in the Dragon Ball franchise, a role he has reprised across various series, films, and specials for decades. His long-standing association with these characters has made him a foundational voice in the world of English-language anime.
Beyond his extensive work in the Dragon Ball universe, McFarland has portrayed a wide array of characters, demonstrating his versatility. Some of his most notable roles include the loyal but perpetually unlucky Jean Havoc in Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, the hot-headed but strategic Jean Kirstein in Attack on Titan, and the flamboyant pirate Buggy the Clown in the Funimation dub of One Piece. He also voiced the stoic swordsman Goemon Ishikawa XIII in numerous Lupin the Third films and specials. His filmography includes roles in a vast number of other popular series, such as Ritsu Soma in Fruits Basket, Mashirao Ojiro in My Hero Academia, Kotaro Amon in Tokyo Ghoul:re, and Fuze in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.
In addition to his on-screen voice work, McFarland has had a prolific and highly influential career behind the scenes. He has served as an ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) director, script writer, and line producer on countless anime titles. His directorial work has shaped the English adaptations of major series, including Fullmetal Alchemist, Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul, and Case Closed. More recently, he directed the English dub for the fourth season of Dr. Stone: Science Future. This dual role as both a performer and a creative lead has made him a central and respected figure in the industry.
In early 2025, it was publicly shared that McFarland had undergone emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor and was later diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. The news prompted an outpouring of support from colleagues and fans, highlighting the deep respect and admiration he has earned throughout his long career.
