Description
Kotaro Amon is a former First Class Ghoul Investigator for the Commission of Counter Ghoul who later undergoes a profound transformation into an artificial one-eyed ghoul. Orphaned at a young age, he was taken in by Donato Porpora, a ghoul who concealed his nature as a child-eating predator while posing as a priest. Surviving this trauma instilled in Amon a rigid belief that the existence of ghouls had made the world fundamentally wrong, driving him to dedicate his life to eradicating them and preventing other children from experiencing his suffering.
Amon is defined by a strict, unwavering sense of justice. He is earnest, disciplined, and stoic, yet deeply compassionate toward victims of ghoul violence. His initial black-and-white worldview begins to fracture after his first major encounter with Ken Kaneki, a ghoul who spares his life and apologizes for the violence of their fight. This act of mercy forces Amon into a prolonged crisis of faith, compelling him to question the righteousness of his lifelong mission and the moral absolutes he once held.
Within the story, Amon serves as a primary human foil to Kaneki, representing the institutional perspective of the CCG. He begins as the partner of the eccentric veteran investigator Kureo Mado, an experience that shapes his early methods. Following Mado’s death, Amon is partnered with Mado’s daughter, Akira, developing a complex professional bond with her. His personal history with his adoptive father, Donato, remains a source of deep conflict and is revisited during his investigations. His rivalry with Kaneki evolves from straightforward enmity into a grudging mutual respect and relentless curiosity that defines both of their arcs.
Amon’s character undergoes a dramatic development. Presumed killed during the Owl Suppression Operation, he reappears in the sequel series as an artificial one-eyed ghoul, having been physically transformed against his will. Forced to exist as the very creature he swore to destroy, he grapples with his new identity and comes to acknowledge his own role in perpetuating the world’s distortion. This evolution transforms him from a rigid enforcer of human order into a figure who embodies the series’ core themes of moral ambiguity and the consequences of ideological extremism.
As a combatant, Amon is highly capable. As a human investigator, he wielded several quinques, including Doujima, a heavy koukaku weapon inherited from a fallen friend that was destroyed by Kaneki; Kura, a versatile koukaku quinque inherited from Mado that could split into twin blades; and the Arata Proto, a powerful kakuja armor that enhanced his physical abilities at great cost to his body. After his transformation into an artificial ghoul, he developed his own koukaku kagune, which manifested as a powerful right forearm and hand that could not only endure immense damage but also channel his own Rc cells to power his quinques. Throughout his journey, his greatest strength remains his relentless dedication, which persists even as it forces him to confront the deepest contradictions of his existence.
