Description
Ka Grava, whose full name is Ka Grava-Rai Fuu-Durham Stahl and who is also known by the shortened name Kaguraba, is the eccentric ruler of the city-state of Haiga, the only truly neutral territory in the region of Nil Kamui. His physical form is not that of an ordinary human. Instead, he exists as an immortal entity inhabiting a mechanical body resembling a robot or a golem, a state achieved through a magical technique known as Wu Xing Ti, which infuses metal components with his essence. This process is very expensive to maintain, which directly influences his primary occupation as a merchant and a self-described "immortal merchant".

In terms of personality, Ka Grava is defined by his sharp entrepreneurial spirit and a seemingly contradictory nature that is both chaotic and principled. While he is a capitalistic "skinflint" driven by greed and a talent for shrewd, sometimes deceptive business deals, this avarice is not purely selfish. He uses the wealth he accumulates to sustain his immortality, which in turn allows him to maintain Haiga as a place of peace and prosperity for all its inhabitants. He treats all subjects as true equals, including the Bounded Ones and other discriminated members of society, many of whom serve as his close confidantes. This pragmatic benevolence makes him a surprisingly warm and humane presence, despite his lack of a human face, and he is often seen as the most genuinely good-hearted member of the main party.

Ka Grava's motivations are deeply tied to his city and his own survival. He remains immortal to uphold Haiga's promise as a safe haven, a role that requires significant financial resources. To further complicate the political landscape and, as he puts it, "stir the pot," he has also been secretly funding the local rebellion effort. This act of "chaotic neutral tomfoolery" eventually draws the ire of the two major armies, Kouran and D'Natia, who lay siege to Haiga, suspecting him of supporting their enemy.

Within the story, Ka Grava serves as an important ally and guide to the protagonist, Ibuki, and his companions. When the party arrives in Haiga seeking help, he agrees to assist them. In exchange for their aid in resolving the military conflict at his gates, he promises to guide them to the Red Dragon and act as their "robo-ambassador" in the negotiations that follow. He is also perceptive, acting as an observer of the group's dynamics, such as when he astutely notes the rapid bond forming between Ibuki and a Kouran general named Gakusho.

Key relationships define his interactions. He has a complicated history with the Kouran general Gakusho, who is both an irritable adversary and a former business partner. Their past dealings involved Ka Grava tricking her into buying a large stockpile of firearms after he had cornered the gunpowder market and raised prices, leading to a grudge that she attempts to settle by shooting him through the head during a parade. Despite this violent encounter, their shared history allows for the possibility of another deal. He also shows a willingness to listen to and agree with Ibuki's desire to avoid becoming a berserker pawn, demonstrating a respect for the young man's wishes for peace.

Ka Grava does not undergo significant development within the scope of his appearances, as he is already a fully realized and long-established figure upon introduction. His character is instead defined by his consistent, dual nature as both a greedy merchant and a benevolent ruler.

His most notable ability is his immortality, maintained by the Wu Xing Ti magic that allows his consciousness to persist even when his mechanical body is damaged. The resilience of this form is demonstrated when he is shot through the head and is simply rushed back to his mansion to have a new head attached. Beyond this physical resilience, his true power lies in his economic influence and political cunning, which have allowed him to establish and maintain Haiga as an independent and neutral power in a war-torn land.
