Description
"Romeo × Juliet" is a 2007 anime series that reimagines William Shakespeare's classic tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" within a fantastical, steampunk-inspired setting. The story unfolds in the floating island kingdom of Neo Verona, ruled by the tyrannical House Capulet after overthrowing the former ruling family, the Montagues. The Capulets maintain their power through fear and oppression, while the Montagues are believed to have been entirely eradicated. However, Juliet Fiammata Asto Capulet, the last surviving member of the Montague family, has been raised in secret by loyal retainers, unaware of her true lineage.

Juliet lives a double life: by day, she is the sheltered daughter of Duke Capulet, and by night, she dons a mask to become the vigilante "Red Whirlwind," fighting to protect the oppressed citizens of Neo Verona. Her world changes when she encounters Romeo Candorebanto Montague, a kind-hearted and idealistic young man from a noble family. Unaware of each other's identities, the two fall deeply in love. Their romance blossoms against the backdrop of political intrigue, rebellion, and the looming threat of Neo Verona's destruction.

As Juliet learns the truth about her heritage and the atrocities committed by the Capulets, she becomes torn between her love for Romeo and her duty to reclaim her family's legacy. Meanwhile, Romeo, who despises the corruption within his own family, seeks to bring peace to Neo Verona. Their relationship faces numerous challenges, including the machinations of Juliet's father, Duke Capulet, who seeks to maintain his iron grip on power, and the mysterious force known as the Escalus, which threatens to destroy the entire kingdom.

The series explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the struggle against fate, blending Shakespearean drama with fantastical elements such as magical trees, flying horses, and a sentient, ancient entity tied to the fate of Neo Verona. The narrative builds toward a climactic confrontation that tests the resolve of both Romeo and Juliet, as they grapple with their roles in the destiny of their world. The story remains faithful to the tragic essence of the original play while introducing unique twists and a richly detailed setting that sets it apart from traditional adaptations.
