Born on September 8, 1971, in Bentonville, Arkansas, he later attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where he graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree emphasizing Communication and Business Administration-Marketing. Before fully committing to a career in entertainment, McCollum worked in marketing and sales, serving as a marketing director in Dallas. His pivot to performance arts began with stage acting, improv comedy, and independent films, eventually leading to work in national commercials for brands like Church's Chicken and Taco Bueno.

McCollum entered the anime voice-over industry in the early 2000s, with one of his earliest notable roles being the voice of Teen Goten in the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball GT, which aired starting in 2003. This role marked the beginning of a long-standing association with the Dragon Ball franchise, where he would later voice Goten in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and other series installments. His breakthrough in the industry was solidified through a variety of major roles across multiple genres, often portraying characters with complex, authoritative, or intense personalities. Another critically acclaimed performance is that of Enforcer Shinya Kogami in the cyberpunk thriller Psycho-Pass and its subsequent films, a role that earned him significant recognition for capturing the character's stoic and driven nature.

McCollum's filmography is extensive and spans several of the most popular anime franchises. He voices the villainous Donquixote Doflamingo in One Piece, the anti-hero assassin Stain in My Hero Academia, and the mage Jellal Fernandes in Fairy Tail. He is also known for his roles as the protagonist Baki Hanma in Baki the Grappler, the cunning Stiyl Magnus in the A Certain Magical Index series, and Gridman in SSSS.Gridman. His versatility extends to lighter and more comedic roles as well, such as Sweden in Hetalia: Axis Powers and Pipimi in Pop Team Epic, alongside numerous supporting parts in series like Black Clover, where he voices Julius Novachrono, and Edens Zero, where he plays Justice. His work is not limited to anime; McCollum has also provided voices for video games, most notably as the playable character Axton in Borderlands 2.

In addition to voice acting, McCollum has had a parallel career in television and production. In 2009, he became a co-host for WFAA-TV's lifestyle program Good Morning Texas, a role he held for approximately two years, and he continued with the station as a producer and contributor. He has also worked as a writer, director, and producer on other projects, including the historical audio drama podcast 1865, which he co-produced.
