Description
Kazuma Yagami, originally born Kazuma Kannagi, is the male protagonist of the series. He is a young man of twenty-two years who operates as a contractor, having formed a pact with the Wind Spirit Lord which grants him mastery over wind magic. His appearance is notable for his tall, dark-haired, and handsome features, often accompanied by a calm and composed demeanor that borders on stoic. The most distinctive physical markers of his power are his eyes which can turn azure blue when he fully activates his contract, or crimson red when he is consumed by rage and loses control of his abilities.

Kazuma was born into the prestigious Kannagi family, a powerful clan of fire mages who view their elemental art as superior to all others. Because he was unable to use fire magic, known as Enjutsu, he was treated as a disgrace and a black sheep, regularly bullied by other children and looked down upon by his relatives. His status reached its lowest point when he was defeated by his cousin Ayano during the ceremony for the succession of the sacred sword Enraiha. Following this humiliation, his father disowned him, leading to his banishment from both the family and Japan itself. He subsequently changed his surname to Yagami, severing his formal ties to the clan.

The defining event of his past, however, is the loss of his beloved, a woman named Tsui Ling or Cui Ling, who was taken from him as a human sacrifice. Her death became his greatest failure and the catalyst for his transformation, driving him to seek power at any cost. He was saved from a suicide attempt after this tragedy by a traveling Taoist master and underwent a training from hell that would unlock his latent potential. This trauma explains the deep-seated solitude and sadness that he keeps hidden beneath a mask of indifference.

Outwardly, Kazuma presents a personality defined by arrogance, snark, and a deadpan sense of humor. He is a classic anti-hero, often demanding payment for his services and insisting he acts only out of self-interest, yet time and again he reveals a core of genuine heroism. He is brutally honest, particularly with members of the Kannagi family, offering harsh critiques of their arrogance and methods. Beneath this cold exterior, however, lies a Jerk with a Heart of Gold; he is intensely caring and protective of those he considers important, though he would rarely admit it. This is most obvious in his interactions with his younger brother Ren, whom he protects fiercely, and his primary love interest, Ayano.

His relationship with Ayano Kannagi is central to the story and defined by a volatile but magnetic chemistry. As second cousins, they share a complicated history, with Ayano being the one who formally defeated him and took his place in the family. Their dynamic is a classic case of Belligerent Sexual Tension; he constantly teases her to provoke her famous temper, while she responds with explosive, comical outbursts of violence. Despite this friction, they form an effective battle couple, with his cool, calculating rationality serving as the ideal blue oni to her hot-headed, impulsive red oni. Although he initially denies any attachment, claiming to work only for money, Ayano's father frequently pairs them together in a transparent attempt to foster a relationship, a scheme that ultimately succeeds as Kazuma develops genuine feelings for her and vows to protect her.

In terms of his role, Kazuma is the de facto problem solver for the Kannagi family, despite his resentment towards them. He returns to Japan after four years and is immediately suspected of murdering clan members with wind magic, forcing him to prove his innocence while hunting the true culprits. He generally serves as a secret weapon, using his overwhelming power to finish battles that other characters cannot win, but more often acting as a tactical strategist who guides his allies. His primary motivation is twofold: to prevent the loss of loved ones that he experienced with Tsui Ling, and to prove that his adopted art of wind magic is not inferior to the fire magic of his birth family. He takes a third option whenever possible, rejecting the sadistic choices presented to him by enemies and forging his own path.

Kazuma shows some development over the course of the narrative. While he begins as a cynical loner who trusts no one and works only for cash, he gradually re-integrates himself into the lives of others. He reconsiders his relationship with his family, visiting his hospitalized father to offer grudging well-wishes, and becomes a mentor-like figure to his brother Ren. The story explores a dark turn when he falls under the influence of a Super-Powered Evil Side, losing his inhibitions and becoming a danger to his friends, which forces him to confront his inner demons before being brought back by Ayano. His journey is one of moving from solitary revenge and self-loathing to accepting love and protection as valid reasons for strength.

Kazuma's notable abilities are extensive, marking him as one of the most powerful characters in his world. As a Contractor with the Wind Spirit King, his base abilities include creating blades of wind to cut enemies, summoning destructive tornadoes, using wind funnels to divert attacks, generating force pushes, and creating solid barriers that render him nearly invulnerable to conventional weapons. He can fly by manipulating air currents, bend light to become invisible, and sense the presence and strength of other magicians from great distances. By generating friction in the atmosphere with his wind, he can also manipulate static electricity. He possesses two distinct transformation states. When enraged, his eyes turn crimson, his wind turns black, and he gains the ability to read minds, but his overall power and precision decrease. When he fully activates his contract, his eyes become azure blue and his power increases tenfold, granting him enhanced regeneration, though this state takes time to activate and is strenuous on his body. He is also an extremely intelligent and observant individual, skilled in martial arts and strategic combat, making him as dangerous with his mind as he is with his magic.
