Description
Chizome Akaguro, known as the Hero Killer Stain, is a former vigilante who became one of the most infamous villains in the My Hero Academia universe. He is a tall, gaunt man with long, unkempt black hair and sharp red eyes. His appearance is fearsome and disheveled, often seen wearing tattered black clothing, a long red scarf, and a metal mask that covers the lower half of his face along with various metallic accessories and blades. His most striking physical feature is his missing nose, a self-inflicted wound from his transformation into Stain.
Born on June 14th, Stain was once a man named Stendhal who operated as a vigilante, hunting and killing criminals he deemed evil. During this time, he wore a mask and had a functioning nose. A pivotal fight with another vigilante named Knuckleduster shattered his mask and his nose. The ensuing philosophical clash, where he was accused of lacking true resolve and hiding behind a persona, led to a profound awakening. He cut off his own broken nose, discarded his mask, and fully embraced his new identity, declaring himself a faceless ideology meant to change the world. This event marked his transition from a killer of villains to the Hero Killer.
Stain’s personality is defined by an extreme, fanatical, and twisted sense of justice. He is a stoic and driven individual who operates entirely according to a strict personal code. He despises heroes who act for fame, money, or personal gain, branding them as "fakes" unworthy of the title. His entire existence is dedicated to purging society of these individuals to create a world where only "true heroes" exist. He holds the Symbol of Peace, All Might, as the sole paragon of a true hero. Despite his murderous nature, Stain is not without a twisted sense of honor. He acknowledges and spares those who demonstrate genuine, selfless heroism, even if they are his enemies, as seen when he saved Izuku Midoriya from a monster called a Nomu and congratulated him on his courageous effort.
Stain’s primary motivation is the reformation of hero society through fear and violence. He believes that by killing fake heroes, he will force society to re-evaluate what it means to be a hero. His actions have a significant and paradoxical impact. While he is a serial killer, the areas where he operates often see a drop in crime rates as heroes become more vigilant and corrupt individuals are cowed. His ideology is dangerously seductive, inspiring followers who agree with his criticisms of society, and his actions inadvertently draw others into the League of Villains, swelling their ranks with those who share his philosophy.
His central role in the story occurs during the Hosu City incident. After paralyzing and hospitalizing the hero Ingenium, the older brother of Tenya Iida, Stain encounters Tenya, Izuku Midoriya, and Shoto Todoroki. In a brutal three-on-one battle, he demonstrates his overwhelming combat ability, nearly defeating the three young heroes despite their powerful Quirks. He ultimately fights them to a standstill and is eventually captured by the pro hero Endeavor upon his arrival at the scene, succumbing to his own severe injuries.
Stain has several key relationships that define his path. He views All Might as the embodiment of his ideal hero and acts in a way to honor that ideal. He has a purely antagonistic relationship with the League of Villains, particularly its leader Tomura Shigaraki, whom he initially sees as a mindless destroyer. The League seeks to recruit him, but he dismisses them, though his later capture and broadcasted ideology ironically serve to strengthen their cause. He develops a complex respect for Izuku Midoriya, recognizing the same selfless spirit as All Might within the young boy. His encounter with Tenya Iida serves as a foil, as he criticizes Iida for acting out of revenge rather than a desire to save others, which Stain considers an unforgivable trait for a hero.
Stain undergoes a notable character development, beginning as the masked vigilante Stendhal who killed villains. His defeat and the shattering of his mask provided a physical and metaphorical "awakening," transforming him into the unmasked, ideologically pure Hero Killer. Following his imprisonment in Tartarus, the high-security prison for villains, he continues to follow his ideology. He later provides critical information to All Might regarding Tomura Shigaraki’s body, using his final moments to aid the heroes in their battle against a greater threat. In a final act of redemption, he intervenes in a fight to save All Might from All For One, a gesture that acknowledges the true heroism he has always revered.
Stain’s notable abilities are formidable despite his Quirk not being intrinsically powerful. His Quirk, named Bloodcurdle, allows him to paralyze anyone whose blood he ingests. The length of paralysis depends on the target's blood type, with type O (Midoriya's type) freezing a person for a relatively short time, while other types can leave a victim immobile for much longer. To supplement this ability, he uses a variety of bladed weapons, including swords and throwing knives, to draw blood from his targets. He possesses superhuman physical prowess, including immense speed, agility, strength, and reflexes, honed through years of combat. His tactical intelligence and expert swordsmanship allow him to defeat multiple pro heroes and powerful Quirk users simultaneously, often without relying on his Quirk at all. His greatest weapon is his indomitable will and extreme resolve, which allows him to push his body far beyond its normal limits to achieve his mission of cleansing hero society.
